| My question concerns the six stud bolts on the bottom of the crankcase that are used to attach the oil strainer screen and cover plate. I have a 1964 Type 1 Beetle and several of the studs have damaged threads and need to be replaced. Do the studs simply unscrew out the bottom of the crankcase or is there another method that must be used to remove them? I don't want to damage them any worse than they already are in attempting to remove and replace them. |

64 Bug? (I think you posted in the wrong forum) Then is this a 40HP or later engine then?
5 of them simply screw into the block. If you are just throwing them away you can vice grip them and unscrew. Otherwise "double-nut" them to remove and install. They are M6x1.0 and 23mm long. Although I personally like to use slightly longer ones (31mm is another common length available) if I have them around.
Depending on the block you are talking about, you might have it where the 6th stud is longer, and goes to a bracket that secures the oil pickup tube in place with a lock nut on the back side. That one is quite difficult to deal with on an assembled engine. If that one is bunged up, you might first try and see if you can clean the threads up with a thread die. This is the one I'm referring to:

| Thanks a million, Andy. Sorry about the incorrect post - I got carried away punching "enter" I guess. The information is exactly what I needed to know and the photos are most helpful too. |
