Hi svenski
I still don't know the date, but you can try to go to the Tarifa Volksfest, which takes place in Tarifa, Cádiz.
I will post the date when I know it.

I belive that the Tarifa volksfest will be in July, but as far as I know, the date hasn't been set yet.
Anyway, I will keep you updated about vw meetings in southern spain... I will post them in this thread.
will you drive from netherland to malaga in a vw?

svenski Sun May 11, 2008 4:19 am

Allright, that's a nice plan!

the meeting you're talking about is in july, i'm there in june.
and no i ain't driving, that's a little to much with a baby who's now 10 months on this big ball

by the way, from which canary isle are you?

Hi svenski,
I planned to go to the Volksfest too, but my daughter is ever jounger than yours (only 2 months old) and I think I gonna wait till the next year event
Also in Estepona, Malaga, there is a shop called Volkstuning. Nice people there (they speak english perfectly), workshop, and some nice vw for sale.
Anyway the vw scene in Spain is not so dynamic as in the rest of Europe. Only 12000 beetles were sold in Spain (most of them here, in the Canaries). Compare with the Benelux, where they sold 826000!

I live in Gran Canaria Is., have you ever been here?

svenski Fri May 16, 2008 11:13 am

why is that, that a country so much bigger than The Netherlands has such a small vee-dub scene?

And no i haven't been to Gran Canaria yet, been to Fuerteventura a couple of years ago, had a great vacation and saw a lot of baywindow vans, mainly surfers offcourse  ....i really like the Canaries, but next vacation is closer to home, cause it's the first time my 10 months old son is going to fly, so i don't want to risk sitting in a plane with a screaming baby for 4 hours

maybe i'll check out those volkstuning folks, its not really around, we're staying in Nerja, and not really planning to travelling around much, we'll see.

thanx for the info!

Sven

We were under the General Franco dictatorship until 1975. Then democracy came to Spain.
During the dictatorship, importation of foreing cars was highly taxed in order to encourage natitonal industry. In fact, it makes foreing cars unafordable.
People could only choose among the national SEAT cars and the foreing brands that have factories in Spain, producing a limited number of models(mainly renault, simca, citroën and later the BMC mini). VW never had a factory here.
Canary islands and the spanish colonies in africa had a different status and didn't have to pay that taxes, and thus the variety of models was a lot wider.
From 1975, lots of used VW were shipped to the continent from the canaries.

When you were at Fuerteventura you should have visited Lanzarote also. It is only a 30min boat trip and it really worth a visit. One third of the island was covered by a recent series of volcano eruptions making an amazing landscape. I love Lanzarote.

I've been in Nerja. Nice place. Famous for its caves (worth a visit)
