I have a 56 oval with original transmission that is working great (with the exception of the noise). It shifts smoothly and does not pop out of gear or anything. However, recently it has begun to make a chattering noise as I drive in all gears. It even does it when I take the car out of gear and coast to a stop. It does slow and speed up with the movement of the car. I must tell you that I recently changed the oil in the transmission to a synthetic and the noise started soon after. Does this sound like transmission, axle, something else? Thanks, Chris L378 Sat May 03, 2008 5:53 am Seems the obvious thing to do for a start is change out the synthetic, making sure youre using the correct weight gear oil.
