View original topic: Flywheel gasket leak

Just changed out the flywheel seal on my 36hp motor but couldn't find any paper gaskets that it had on originally so i used the aftermarket thin metal ones. Leaked. Made my own paper gasket and leaked. Put both metal and paper gaskets. Leaked. Any suggestions?

Your gasket sandwiches will change the crankshaft end play. Make sure when you put it together that you check the end play before you are done and adjust accordingly with shims.

Try to find out where the oil is coming from. If it is coming from the outer seal, it will spin out from the back side of the flywheel. If it is coming from the paper gasket, it will go through towards the clutch, and spin out the holes in the flywheel next to the clutch disk surface.

Check the surface of the flywheel where the seal rests to see if it is smooth; have it machined if not. Check the surface of the flywheel and crank where the paper gasket goes and make sure it is smooth; use a little Curil on the correct paper gasket.

Ah...what should the endplay be set at? Oh i already checked where its coming from, its from the inside not out so i know the oil is leaking from where the gaskets are. Also one last thing, what should the flywheel bolt be torqued to? Thanks!

I believe the flywheel torque spec is 217 ft.lbs. VERY important to get this torqued down. If you don't and the flywheel comes loose, it will oval out the dowel pin holes and you will never keep it tight. It will beat up the crank end then you will need a new crank and a new flywheel....

Ask me how I know...

0.07 to 0.13 mm. Three shims are required of various thickness to get the proper endplay.

Lol thanks john...i had heard it was about 215 ft lbs or somewhere in the area! Yeah seems like we all learn the hard way. As for the shims there are three on there already so ill go back and just check the endplay. Hopefully its already there. Thanks!!!
