recently got rust but solid floor 72 ghia coupe w/ 1600dp ae mtr.. just taught my self to static-time it...runs real good, bu the condenser is facing me and notch on distrib is facing forward... i know these thigs are supposed to have a retard for cyl#3...does this mean that i now have extra retard oncyl #2 that i don't nee, and is #3 now too hot?..how can i safely turn this thing 180 deg the other way?, will i have to change the wires on the cap? 47 yrs old, and have had many vw's, but only now trusting myself to work on the m...thanks inadvance for any help you may have for my daily driver

The distributor drive gear may not be in correctly. Here's how to check and see if its timed correctly: Take off the valve cover off the side with #1 cylinder and while turning watch for the intake valve on #1 to depress, when it starts coming back up you will be on the compression stroke so watch the pulley and line up top dead center( farthest left notch on pulley)with the case half. Now the rotor needs to be lined up with the line on the top of the distributor were the cap sits on it. If not lined up the retard will not be on #3.
