I'm converting my 1954 oval back to 6v and I need to buy a 6v generator. I've already got a (round) 6v regulator so it's just the generator I'm interested in.
When I bought it it was in a 'limbo' state partway through a 6v to 12v conversion but I have more 6v stuff than 12v. My main priority is to get this car back on the road ASAFP and work on getting it 'right' gradually.
Ruling out things like stamped-in date codes on the generator body etc., is any old unit 'correct', or at least will any old unit work for the time being?
If I could afford to be picky, and at some later stage I will be, what identifies a correct generator for a '54?
Cheers,

| i would think you should be able to use any 6 volt generator for a beetle of course. as far as the correct one i think it will be date coded somewhere around when your car was built. do a lttle searching as i seem to remember this topic before maybe in the split section if i remember right. hope this helps. |

Johnshenry has some very good info on the date stamps of generators.

You need a "thin-slot" generator.
