Teachers in CA start at about $40K and they work 180 to 187 days. Basic health care, dental, and vision care is included, but if they want Kaiser or other more expensive health plans, then they have to pay out of pocket ($300-$500 per month visit co-pays not included).
Compare your workday/week to theirs...
Some go in to work before their contractual hours to get ready (no they don't get paid to do so, they work for free during that time), while others stay far beyond their contractual hours to work (again working for free). When the school is open on weekends, some come in to work (unpaid). Teachers take work home and work on it there (unpaid). Teaching, evaluating student progress, and reporting back is a fast-paced high pressure job. Student progress and standardized test results qualify a teacher's effectiveness...how many of your job evaluations are based on the test-taking skills of children? (ages 7 to 12 in elementary school)

Staffing is at 20+:1 K-3 and 34:1 4-6...that's 20-34 kids just like your little darlings. Can you believe that some of them don't behave? Can you believe that some children (unmedicated) can't focus on a task for more that 15 seconds?
Some parents are worse than the kids.

If your elementary school has a vice principal and your child knows his/her name...you should ask your child about it...the vice principal handles the discipline and most VP's don't always get a chance to get to know the "good" kids.

Oh yeah, you want strict, tough, zero-tolerance discipline--unless it's your kid.

I think teachers should make $6k a paycheck.

As a person working on my PhD and also teaching undergraduate business courses at UF, someone emailed me this not long ago. I thought it appropriate to copy and paste here:

What do teachers make?

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

He reminded the other dinner guests what everyone already knows about teachers: "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

To emphasize his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?" Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to know what I make?" (She paused for a second, then began...)

"Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could."

"I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor."

"I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them sit for 5 without an iPod, Game Cube or movie rental."

"You want to know what I make?" (She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table.)

''I make kids wonder."

"I make them question."

"I make them apologize and mean it."

"I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions."

"I teach them to write and then I make them write because keyboarding isn't everything."

"I make them read, read, read!"

"I make them show all their work in math. They use their God-given brain, not the man-made calculator."

"I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know in English while preserving their unique cultural identity." "I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe."

"I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life." (Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.)

“Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn't everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant."

"You want to know what I make?"

I MAKE A DIFFERENCE. What do you make, Mr. CEO?"

I love fiction. Like this cutsie conversation ever really took place.

No, it must be real. It was in an email.

Of course it's fiction ](*,) ! I guess the actual point escaped you :-s

Snoop Bob Fri Jun 12, 2009 6:03 pm

FL Deluxe. It doesn't escape everyone...Some people understand how it feels to make a difference or try to make a difference in their career. Others understand but just like to play it off as if it's no big deal. Others, just don't get it. To each their own. Everyone has their place in this world.

Not to bash, but...
If "teaching undergraduate business courses" means you stand up front and lecture for an hour...FYI...lecturing is the LEAST effective mode of instruction.
You can turn your back on undergraduates and none of them will disappear...don't try it with first graders. [/b]

You knew what 'fiction' was so you must have had a good teacher somewhere along the line.

Every level of educational instruction has its unique challenges. So no, I don't think you would handle a section of 450 college students the same way you would a class of first graders.

bill may Sat Jun 13, 2009 6:53 am

if you think the cost of education is high, think of the cost of ignorance.

i can't spell,write a non run on sentence,or do a cohesive thought.

Wow! Hello Everyone.
Kor, Beckett and I were on a two week vacation traveling through
Montana, Idaho and Utah. We had an amazing time.
I was able to make it to Octo with a few hours left. I got to
see some friends and talk a little bit. From there I went to
Blackstar. It was wonderful seeing everyone again. The blackstar shirt
is really cool. Hubby Bus has been amazing. Hope everyone is doing well
and sorry I haven't been on in so long we just got really busy.
I am hoping we make it to Jerome. Cross your fingers!
Take care and talk with you soon.

Will, Korie and Beckett

If you make it to northern Idaho next time, give a shout. Hope the trip went well.

Good to hear from you Will, sorry my family missed yours at Blackstar and OCTO :(

The average teacher in CA may make 55k a year BUT that is a statistic and we all know that statistics are misleading by their nature. There is a top tier of just a few teachers who make larger salaries. The vast majority make quite a bit less than 55k.

I am taking a paycut this year and will not make 50k. Summer school has been eliminated in my school district and ergo my income has gone too. I have ten years experience in my district and at age 50 with a Masters Degree. I know I could "make more" doing something else but I teach because I like students and I know I'm doing something really important.

Hubby Bus Wed Jun 17, 2009 6:07 pm

I'm looking to pick up some parts. I wanna give the engine alittle more
power so I can pull a small camping trailer.
These are the parts......
1.25 Ratio rockers
40mm Kadron Carbs
Springs Single Hi rev
Doghouse Shroud (not sure if mine has it, anyone know?)

And also if anyone in my area, Ventura, wants to help me
put these things in cause I have no clue how.
Free beers and food!!!!!! haha

Thanks
Will
