| That very well could be it, you need to post a pic where your screwdriver is. To read the wiring diagram, get a starting point (the fuse box). Pick a wire that you know is in the vacinity of the wire you found (I.E., left side towards the rear fender, front right headlight, etc.) and see if any of those colors match. From the looks of the pic, you were in the back seat by the drivers side door, and by the wiring diagram, unless that wire is any of those 5 wires and are the same color, its probably nothing. |

The handle end of the screwdriver is on a bolt that secures the body to the pan. There are also two more (one on each side) in the rear wheelwells by the shock mounts, and two more under the gas tank up front, besides the obvious ones that run the perimeter of the pan.
Nice find, by the way. It should make a great project. |

Well if its that bad then just order a complete set from any of the reputable VW shops, West Coast Metric, Wolfsburg West, BFY etc. You can get the window rubber and trim all together. What is "Gerties" OG color?

| I think that bolt can be used for seat belt anchoring, but I use the seat back, or I don't put them in at all, they are not even required in such and old car, they never were equipped at factory, and you have the option to put them in, personally, I'd definatally put them in up front, but the back, not so much. |

Not even an option, with two kids who are already chopping to go for a ride, they'll have belts too.
Agave: Black. I know I'll catch flack for this, but I will not repaint her black. Our summers are too hot for that. We've picked out Panama Beige to go with. We're tossing around a two tone, with the bottom as white, but we're a long ways from that.
Day three of ownership and the interior is nearly out, except for the dashboard and some really, really annoying bits of headliner that are refusing to come out. I removed the door glass today and was so nervous because it's all the original glass. But it was all right in the end. The seals are such a mess. They are nearly cement from age.
After dinner, the running boards come off and the front bumper and braces. Aaaaah, the smell of car grease in the evening!
Edit: Here's the look from inside the front:

Quick question for you....the answer may bear on your question about the rear window trim....
Do the back side windows on Gertie swing open? Looks to me from the one picture as if you may have the optional "pop-outs".... |

| I do have the pop-outs. And they are in great condition. |

That being the case, I think the other replies were referring to the trim found on the standard rear quarter windows.
I believe that what you were referring to is known as "pinch welt"....it is vinyl, and the window seals closed against it. It surrounds the window opening, and covers the edge of the headliner.
Whether you keep it or not would depend on its condition. It is available if you want it, or you can use your old ones. |

Chassis no. 5700600 would have been etiher 10th or 13th Aug 1963 and a 1964 Model year VW.

My question for this post is this: during investigated on the Technical section for the chassis number, it is showing my number: 5745068, is under 1960. Is that correct?

'63?.... or '64?
Let's see the license plate light! Big tag light indicates '64, little light indicates '63.
Most '63s (but not all) had the Wolfsburg crest on the front hood..... |

That is Not 100% reliable as an indicator of the year. My 1964 which was less than 10 cars under no. 5700600 came originally with the small license light and no half ring below the horizontal horn bar on the steering wheel.
The access panels for the steering box and the one on the other side did not have the same orientation. One was 90 degrees to the other like this - < ^
It was bought by my father 20 Sept 1963. Little items like the light housing did not always change with the exact change of model year.

I question whether the two middle plugs are for seat belts. I suspect not based on the year of your car. Maybe some one with more knowledge has another thought/opinion.
As for the bolt where your screwdriver is, it is used as a pivot point for the rear seat back. There will be one on the other side also. They require shoulder bolts to allow the seat back to pivot forward. |

I'd like to try to keep it black. A well insulated bug is quiet, and cool in the summer. I had a darg blue green beetle (not sure what color I ended with - thought it was SUPOSED to be SeaBlue but it looked way too dark for that) in Az. I insulated the HECK out of the headliner and door panels, and it was in fact COOLER inside than my 2002 Hyundai!
Black with red and white interior is about as cool as you can get.... |

True, but they could have been pushing remaining 63s out of the factory to get ready for the 64. From what you said, that is early in the 64 life, about 15 days. Who knows, if its titled a 63, then let it be. How about enjoying the car. |

mailman wrote: Most '63s (but not all) had the Wolfsburg crest on the front hood..... I think you mean most did not have the crest; its use ended about two months into the '63 model year. As a late '63 or early '64, this car definitely would not have had it.
Jinxed, your car looks like a solid, original example to start your resto with. Great find! If I may make one minor note...?
It looks like the replacement flasher relay (green circle) is dangling loose. I know you're now tearing the car apart, but when it goes back together (or if you do any work now with the battery connected) please consider mounting it solidly somewhere. When they're loose, they have a habit of shorting out connections on the fuse block, leading to some seemingly puzzling and difficult-to-diagnose wiring woes. I nearly killed myself when the one on my friend's car shorted the ignition switch, car was in gear, turned over, and pinned me against a wall for 20 seconds .
If you're doing a detailed restoration, you also might consider sourcing a working original-style relay, which I believe mounts where the yellow circle is (someone please correct me I'm wrong). Again, great car. Welcome and good luck! |
