Hi Im gonna be traveling to LA in August and just wanted a bit of advice. I want to rent a car and then just travel around (Am flying back from San Fransisco)Any advice on hire cars would be great and any good hotels (not to expensive)

I don't think you can rent a car in LA and return it in San Francisco.

There are lots of cheap hotels are cheap but it depends what you mean by cheap.... Motel 6 is probably one of the cheapest and they are everywhere. They usually have a sign with the price displayed that you can see from the highways. Sometimes they are in poor condition.

Mate, I know you're taking the piss! Havin a bubble on us Yanks! Everything is cheap for you Brits over here. REALLY.

If you plan on hiring a car for your holiday, I'd check with the rental car companies as far as how it works with collecting the car for hire in LA then dropping it off in SF? I am pretty sure you can do this. And according to Euros who are coming out next month, they say the car rental was CHEAP!?

Hotels are everywhere in LA! I'm with Ev on Motel 6. They are cheap and everywhere. The further you are away from the tourist traps, the cheaper hotels are. If this is your first time here??? DO NOT GO TO HOLLYWOOD. You will be very disappointed. Also, it depends what you want to see and do while on your holiday over here?? Go to San Diego.
Just ask as to what you would like to do or see in LA and Angelenos will respond. I might still be in FRANCE in August? Cuz it's HOT in LA during that month.

Thanx for the advice, It will be my first time in the states, as for what I want to do while Im there, anything to do with cars/bikes am into surfing. I will have about 10 days between getting to LA and San Fran so just want to see as much as poss. Are there gonna be any custom/vw car shows during the time Im there ? Thanx for the advice

... and of course you can rent a car in LA and return it in SFO (it just costs some extra). Book in Europe though - it's cheaper.

We just returned from the LA area and stayed at Comfort Inn in Costa Mesa...$79/night, very clean and quiet. It's right off the 55 freeway near Triangle Square and close to Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and all the Orange County ACVW shops (Gene Berg, Proformance, LowBugget, Fat, VeeDub Parts Unlimited, etc :)
