After taking some damage this past winter (portable carport in the wind), I decided the 69 needed some body work and paint. I chose Lotus White for the sides and Royal Red for the rest of the car (69 VW colours). The white has a bit more of a yellow tint than what I expected. But, I think it will look real classy with the darker red.

Is that just in your garage?

blarneyman Sat May 10, 2008 11:46 am

Yup! I made a panel to fit in the bottom of the garage door with a box fan pulling the air out and fresh air over the top of the door. I put a furnace filter in front of the fan to catch the excess paint in the air. Works pretty good. By the time I get the paint gun clean the garage is aired out enough to take off the respirator.

I went out this morning after the paint had some more time to harden and pulled the remaining bits of tape. With the hood down you can get a better idea of the colour combo. The red will be a bit darker when I get done with the respray. I was going to leave the top and front hood, and colour match, but decided to do the whole car back to vintage colours.

who makes the paint? ppg?

what are the ppg color codes?? this is exactly the paint scheme i was thinking of using on my 69
thanks

Yes, it is PPG. The supply shop just used there cross reference chart from the VW color codes...
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/paintcodestype1.php

I used the Aug. 67 to July 68 chart because of the white I wanted, even though my car is a 69. That red in the pics is not the finish color. That is what the PO had it painted. The royal red is much darker.

All prepped and ready for round 2. Had to take care of a few small dents first. Tomorrow morning I start on the red.

Looking good....have you thought of taking the fenders off or pulling them out away from the car some . keep posting the pics :D

blarneyman Tue May 27, 2008 10:34 pm

I have the paper pretty flat and it doesn't look like it will affect the paint spray. The fenders aren't as tight as they look in the pics.

The paint is still wet. I am going to wet sand and possibly put on a couple more coats.

Painting with the doors and hood closed like that, is it hard then to come around the lips and pillars and blend it all? door jambs etc...

In my bug, i need to paint the dash and inside just as much as the outside.

blarneyman Sun Jun 01, 2008 11:14 am

I wasn't real concerned with getting around the door edges. The PO had it sprayed at MACCO and they didn't do around the edges either. They didn't even fix the dents for that matter. The door edges are still, for the most part, factory red paint. So what I spray is going to blend pretty well.

I'm in the process of wet sanding (had a couple flaws in the paint) and I think I'll spray another coat or two to finish it off.

Very nice, I love that color combination and look forward to seeing the finished car.

The past couple weeks have been very busy. NOT with the car  Hopefully I'll be able to get back on it this week. I'm wet sanding the red and spraying a couple more coats (when I get to it).
