Nothing yet  My life sucks right now! To stinking busy! I am getting ready to head out to the shop here in a few minutes. This will be the first day I've had time to work on the car in 3+ weeks. Hopefully things will slow down a bit this week and I can put in a couple evenings on the car.

Shoot.. first paint job... looks great! I want to see pictures of it finished!!!

blarneyman Thu Jun 19, 2008 8:35 pm

Finally got the thing all wet sanded last night. If everything goes according to my plan [-o< I'll be putting 2-3 more coats of paint on, on Saturday. I'm dying to get the masking off the car so I can finally see how the two colors look together. So, if everything goes on schedule, I should have some pics on Sunday (without lights and stuff).

Did you let the paint dry with the masking tape still on the car? If so you might be pulling paint off with the tape. Go slow!

blarneyman Thu Jun 19, 2008 9:09 pm

I planned on going slow. The masking did stay on as the red dried because I new right away that I was going to spray another coat. I'll be pulling the masking as soon as the next coats are tack free. The tape is on finish paint, so it will just be the edge that might catch.

You might want to try pulling off the masking, and retaping before your final coat. I left the masking on my beetle too long, and removing the tape was NOT fun... the hardened paint was stronger than the tape.
Also, i think if you pull of the tape before it hardens up, it might let the paint "lie-down" along the edge a little nicer...
are you going to clear this?

No pics today :(
I screwed up the paint. I guess this will happen if you've never had any experience at it. I am going to wet sand AGAIN and see if I can get some help from a friend. I know 2 guys real well that do this for a living so hopefully one of them can help me out.

ack, what happened?

blarneyman Sat Jun 21, 2008 11:15 am

Not really sure. I ended up with a lot of orange peel and a couple places where I think I might have gotten to close with the gun(kind of runs but not totally). Probably comes down to a cheep gun for the most part.

MTCOLORS Sat Jun 21, 2008 11:42 am

hope this helps,

Orange peel..

Under reduction and/or air pressure too low.
Thinner/reducer evaporates too fast for spray conditions.
Excessive film thickness or piling on of heavy wet coats.
Improper spray gun set-up.
Improper painting technique.

I mixed the paint according to the spec sheet (didn't appear to be to thick) it was somewhat watery looking. In other words, it ran off the stir stick quite easily. The temp was a bit lower than the spray instructions for the reducer, so evaporation shouldn't have been an issue.
Painting technique, gun set-up and air pressure :?: First time painter and cheap gun. I think I need a few lessons

Man that sucks, and I totally know how you feel. But if its just orange peel and maybe a run or sag, you should be able to color sand the peel and scrape the runs with a razor and be fine without a respray. Hard to say without pics, the first coats looked good though.

I have been talking with a friend about giving me a hand with the paint. It's a little difficult to get a good finish when you've never had any instruction. One can asked and read all they want, but hands on with an instructor is where you really learn. At todays prices for PPG enamel, I just through about $70-$75 down the toilet this morning in one coat of paint. I don't want to keep doing that :x . I will be wet sanding all of the red on the car, just to keep as clean of finish as I can.

Live and learn, learn and live

Finally got my car done (almost  ). I still have to cut and polish, but I'm going to wait until this winter so I can enjoy it for now. The last time I posted, I had messed up the paint and had to sand it back down smooth before I could re-spray.

Here she is, in all her glory!

I still need to get new running boards and eventually a headliner and window seals.

JinxedSydney Thu Aug 14, 2008 8:18 am

Glad that you finally finished it!!! It looks great!

I noticed the name of your car is Gertrude ......
That is what my wife named our 69. We call her Gerty for short.

amarinoo@netzero.net Thu Aug 14, 2008 4:13 pm

is there a clear coat?

blarneyman Thu Aug 14, 2008 6:22 pm

No clear. It is PPG Delstar enamel. It looks beautiful from 10 feet, but if you get close you will find some flaws. I would think that a cut & polish will remove 99% of the bad spots.

Hey, I painted it in my garage with a $50 paint gun  . I'm happy with the results for a first timer.
