I got a new 25hp gasket kit from WW.

They no longer include the cylinder crush gasket- mating the head to the cylinder.

The kit is a 36hp kit with 25hp intake crush gaskets and head nut gaskets.

Are the cylinder crush gaskets necessary? Or can I get along without them?

Standard cylinder and head, non pitted or damaged.

Thanks, Stan

Cylinder to head seals are only needed for heads that have the mating surfaces machined. And in fact you can not find them in 1949 parts book. In Sept 1950 book they are listed. I was told VW did not see them necessary but they were requested by some foreign importer.

they are just there to add a little redundancy so if the head to cylinder junction were to fail exhaust gas would not make its way into the car through the heater. This was continued on the 36hp and 40 hp stale air engines and finally dropped in 66 or 67.
