I'm trying to figure out the proper way to polarize my generator. I did some searching, but people seem to play fast and loose with the various terms, and I want to be absolutely certain I don't blow anything up..

Do you do this with the regulator connected or not? The engine is out of the car and fan belt is off.

I have the Bosch instructions, but a 6v generator doesn't have the same connectors as the instructions call out. It seems as simple as connecting the battery + lead to the 61 terminal for a second and make the generator spin. Is that it?

That is it. If you follow the directions below you are good. You do not do it "through" the reg, but you can do it with the reg on the gen. Basically you ground the thinner wire out of the gen and apply the battery lead to the thicker wire. The gen (belt off) should spin clockwise pretty strongly. Let this run for maybe 10-15 seconds and that is all.

This applies a little residual magnetism to the steel field winding cores so that when the generator spins up, the polarity is correct.
