I bought this motor the other day for my bus. I've never seen this breather set up before. Is there a way I can junk all that stuff and plug up those breathers on the heads?
The engine code is a GE, I have more pics in my gallery. From what i was told it came out of a 79 bus, but I've never seen a bus with breathers on the heads.

The engine block is not a 411/412, not with GE stamped on it. But those vented heads, those were only found on, I believe, 1700s. I'd pop off the valve covers and look at the casting numbers and see if they match anything on the chart you'll find on this page:

The engine block might be GE, California - but I think the heads and their vents must be from a 1700. At least, I can't remember ever seeing anything past the 1700s having vented heads.
I had to dig a bit to find it, but here's the hose map from the 411 service manual. Looks a lot like what you have pictured.

| Where did you find your engine number? Was it from the crankcase or the fan shroud? Your fan shroud is pretty late as the sticker looks like one for hydraulic lifter engines. Your engine number may not match the fan shroud number. |

fan shroud and case, the numbers match up.
I have a 1700 laying around here, and I don't have any breathers on the heads, they are vw heads too.
I'm gonna switch it to the 2000cc FI for a bus, cause I don't have the parts that you show in the picture there. |

| Not all 1700 heads have those vents. |

| Cali regs were different for late VWs, so there may be unique setups for cars originally sold there. I know the EGR for T3s was Cali-only, for example. T4s might have had unique hardware, too. |

thanks everyone for the replies!
I'm going to plug up the breather hoses, what do ya'll recomend? Can I just leave a short hose on the breather and plug the end up? This won't effect anything will it? |
