Anyone here been fried to hell by a 220? I was over the weekend changing the element in the oven. I flipped the breaker and the clock was off but when I grabbed that sucker it had me. I know what its like to be in the electric chair now. I couldnt let go and the breaker wouldnt blow and as every muscle in my body was tight as hell I figured to try and fall backwards. Well I did thus disconnecting the element from the stove. When I woke up (knocked me out) my hand was bleeding from burns and I was bleeding from the nose. WOW what a ride. Ill un plug the SOB next time. I cant even go near it without having a flashback.

Wow. You're definitely in the running to be listed as a Darwin Award winner. Keep up the good work.

Thanks! Not quit the Darwin awards but it was damn dumb. Who knew there were two breakers to the damn stove. I just moved to this house. I have some work to do. It still hurt like hell. Thank God I have a good heart!

You're fucking lucky!
Get a circuit tester, the kind that emits a buzz when there is a hot circuit nearby. Less than $20, size of a pencil and cheap insurance!

might want to get checked out, just because it didn't stop your heart during the incident doesn't meant it didn't get damaged.

Thanks for the concern everyone. I have a doc appt. this week so I will have him take a look. I have heard this can kill. Went and bought the tester already. Now if only my hair will grow back.

Seriously, you're damned lucky to be alive. About 10 years ago, I read an article in the local paper about a "brilliant" individual who had designed a new house for himself and his wife. Genius boy was wiring the dryer outlet on a live circuit and was thrown back approximately 10' into the opposite wall in the room. He ended up a paraplegic because of that.

If your oven has two breakers, and you turned one off, then you were hit with 110V. Not that that won't smart a little, but you only had one phase.

67 Shane Mon May 12, 2008 11:28 am

HOLY SHIT! I dont know of anyone who has been hit. I feel damn lucky now after hearing all this. No wonder I still get a nervous shit feeling when I look at the damn oven. My girlfriend says Im traumatized. Well I got seven or so lives left I guess cuz this one used up more than one. I should post this in the I only will do this once thread.

Beat me to it.

All I know is I couldnt let go to save my life. It hurt like hell and I would have fried had I not fallen back. I have been hit by 110 more than once. This was full 220. Tightened up and just couldnt let go. My fist was stuck shut and all I could think was I gotta get off this or Im gonna die. Maybe the bitch has three breakers or more but Im not going to find out. Fuck that thing. I have no idea what crack head wired this joint but its getting anewed ASAP.

I got hit with 1660 (yes I said 1660) once.
Damn near killed me. It blew the conduit
that I touched it with into peices, and knocked
me out. Thirty feet in the air (thank God for
safety harnesses). Had a complete checkup and
doc said that I was 100%.

Could that have something to do with your user name?
My father is a lineman and was electrocuted (sp?) a few years back. Around 25000 volts into his ass. He was blown almost twenty feet the transformer exploded sent a huge fireball in the air and he hit the side of the truck airborn and rolled under when he hit the ground. He woke up with his partner holding him down and he had no clue what was happening. His skin was gone from finger tips to elbows and he swelled so fast that his wedding ring cut off circulation to his finger so he had to have the tip removed. He had holes in his back blown where the electricity came out. Life flight and ICU for almost a year. I saw his raw meat on his arms and there were burnt black spots on the muscles and tendons in his wrists. Its kind of crazy to see an arm without skin and watch the tendons stretch when moving the fingers. He survived barely. Coming out of surgery I stopped the gurney leaned over and asked him if he was dead. He replied your not getting rid of me that easy. Hes as tough as nails. They said he would lose his fingers and never climb a power pole again. 18 mos. after recovery he was in the lineman rodeo running up poles with his hooks and all fingers except the wedding ring tip. A tough old man. Refuses to except anything other than what he sees as doable. It screwed him in the head alittle but hes strong as an Ox again. He worked for KUA in Kissimmee Florida.

Just unplug the stove next time. Stoves don't have 2 breakers. If it's an electric stove it has a 2pole breaker. Don't buy the little light up pen tester because they SUCK. Never trust those kind of testers. Your biggest problem was (probably) when you were pulling out the element you were fully grounded because you were laying right on the stove. You can get hit by the neutral (white wire) too and get the shit knocked out of you. It depends how much amperage is coming back to the panel. I've been hit by 277-480 volts before. 277-480 feels just like you grabbed the head of a weed eater, hurts like a mother.....and you loose your breath and your joints hurt. I've been an electrican for 20 years and shit happens.

DaveM Mon May 12, 2008 2:37 pm

I occasionally do electrical work with the power on. Just depends on how careful I feel like being. It's a good challenge and a test of hand skills. If it's after 4pm and I've got one hand holding a martini, I usually then almost always turn the power off. I think I always turn it off if it's 220.

gonebuggy Mon May 12, 2008 2:39 pm

who cares about volts, it's the amperage that makes you dance!
