i don't hate supers at all, but i can sure tell the difference between a 71/72 super and a 71/72 standard from a great distance...i do agree that from the windscreen back, they look identical.

Meh, they look the same to me. I know the fenders are different, and so are the hoods, but the difference is really not that obvious to me.

Come over to my house, I have my 73 super and my brothers 72 standard parked in the driveway side by side, and they look totally different from the doors forward... Love em both though!

Q : Whats the difference between humping a fat chick and riding a moped? A: Not much, they are both fun till your freinds catch you doing it... Let it rest, all this wasted energy squabbling over whether Super beetles are worthy.... The true bond is between you and your ride, plain and simple...no one knows the hours of sweat, thought and pleasure that car given you ....You can spend a fortune and have some shop build you a splitty, take it there to get every bit of maintenance done, and hire the boy next door to wash it....Does it give you the right to look down your nose at some guy who is slowly restoring his super while he drives it to work every day?And truly, who is really closer to his car?I can tell you who enjoys it more for damn sure......You cant buy it.... it comes from within.Muir said it best...Come to terms with your Ass,for it bears you....

All this time deciding on whether the Super is liked or not... we should be united in hating the true ugly duckling of the VW line... the 411/412. 8-[

wewll, yeah if a super and standard are right next to each other, then of course you can see the differences. I'm just sayin I personally can't really tell the difference if i look at a 71 super, then later i see a 71 standard. I guesss i haven't reached that level of vw awsomeness yet  . For example all (stock) fenders look the same to me, unless they are side by side (except for baja fenders, obviously).

i almost bought 1 412 converted to a pickup once. If only it wasn't rusted all to hell. It was still nice. Just personal preference i guess.

i just got a 71 super vert and love it the only things that i dislike about it is the high back seats and the padded dash but since i am doing a compleat resteration i am changing both

Love my Super, and I do plan to drive it daily once I'm out of college and more importantly, out from under my parent's roof. It seems to be more practical than driving an earlier model daily, and you get less flak if you do happen to do something that's not stock. I don't mind the padded dash, but I've always loved the metal look. That's one of the few things I'll be changing when I restore my car.

if you change those things, it can not possibly be a restoration.

I couldn't figure it out for a while. Here's how. You can tell by the angle that the side of the hood makes with the center-line of the hood in the front right above the bumper.

Below, the car on the left is a standard; those lines (green) basically come to a point. There's very little between the two lines (purple). On the right is a superbeetle. There's a significant flat part betwen where the outside edge and the centerline end up.

i love my 74 super. its never givin me any major problems. atleast not anything that couldn't be fixed on the side of the road, lol. also, because of the struts, they handle WAY better then any standard beetle could ever handle. i can take turns much faster in my super then in any of my other bugs, thats for sure. i wish super beetles had 4 wheel struts instead. that would be kick ass. and i would think, make modding a super beetle to be 4 wheel drive, much easier

There are only two types of air-cooled VWs: Good and bad. Decide for yourself which is which.

I decided a long time ago that I pretty much like all ACVWs in their stock form, and most when given my particular style of customization.

its easy to tell a late model super, they have bigger curved windshields, otherwise just look under the bumper standards have a bit of a wedge there super aprons curve under the car towards the back. Also standard hoods dive below the bumper line, super hoods barely touch the top of the bumper...

If you want a great handleing car, get a super, if you want a nostalgic car get an older standard. I started with a 67, HATED it, it gets blown all over the freeway, the gearing is lower... I LOVED the way it looked, its LOOKS LIKE A BEETLE SHOULD, what everyone thinks of when they think "beetle", but I drive my beetle everywhere, and even after trading the body of my 67 for the body of a 73 super that had been sitting for 15 years it was noticeably more stable on the free-way, mostly due to the curved windscreen, I then added a Kamei spoiler, top line MAXX struts, and a lowered sway bar to the front, and the handling is on par with a miata, its THAT good. I also put disk brakes on it and it stops in quick order. I loved the way my 67 looked, but I love the way my super drives.

The super looks like a 73 or later. The windshield is curved. I like rare vehicles. I have a 72 super, it's a bitch trying to find the right hood for it, but I like the fact that most people can't tell that it's a super.

Im partial to the Supers, but like a few have mentioned too, I'm SO not up to date with VW Awesomeness yet. LOL 8)

My first VW is a 77 Super Vert. :) YAY!

The snobbery about beetles (early bugs vs late bugs vs supers) only
raises its ugly head among beetle owners. Most everyone you meet out in
the world can’t tell them apart – even when you point out the differences.
That said, it’s been my experience that most non-bug owners either like
them all or hate them all equally.
Who cares though? It’s YOUR car! If you like it that is all that matters.
I own a 1970 bug but I wouldn’t hesitate in buying a super. I’m actually
looking for another bug so it just might be a super.
The BEST thing about supers is they are CHEAPER to buy!
