I've had a lot of VWs, and may be it's just because I grew up with early 70's VW that I prefer them.
I have had early cars, and found them lacking.
The 71 and 72 Super are really the best Beetles ever made.
I have a '78 Convertible, and it is not nearly as much fun to drive as the '72 Super we had in the family when I was a kid. |

And they handle 1 million times better, lol. seriously, i don't get it either, why do people with ovals and split hate so much on supers. i mean compared to a super, ovals handle like shit, slow as hell, death traps in a front end collision (lack of steering column cage), awful steering radius, you can't see out of the back window meaning you have some pretty crazy blind spots, you cant see shit at night (6v headlights) etc. i mean later models are basically the same car with a lot of upgrades. i wonder how many people who have earlier model bugs, who hate on supers, have late model 12v generators, late model 1600 dp engines, and even a late model pan. don't get me wrong, i like all bugs the same, oval or super. but personally, i much prefer a 1600 over a 36 hp or 40 horse, and IRS over swing axle. oh, and 12VOLTS!!!, lol
so imo, if anyone who has an early model bug, with any upgrades found on late model bugs, or super, they should just STFU. |

| I don't get why people don't understand this. Early cars are really quite beautiful, late models are ugly as HELL. Don't get me wrong, I love 'em just the same and done up right they look great, but stock isn't for me. Bloody nose super beetle stance? nah, I'm calling topline. |

Amen; so did I (well... visited their site, anyway).
I don't discriminate - if the engine's in the 'wrong' place and looks like it belongs in a Piper, it's alright by me. |

Not personally a fan of Supers although I've driven a few and there is a big difference in how well the Super handles, feels, etc... And the German Look is beautiful.
My personal feeling is that one day (and not too long from now) all aircooled VW's will be desireable, "fat chick" or not. |

I agree, I know I am going to regret parting out and junking the late bugs I have. They look rough now but 10 years from now there will be people restoring cars like these. Atleast i'm saving any usable parts |

I always wondered how well a engine from a piper would do in a bug  . Or maybe a bigger flat motor from a plane, like a 295hp GO-480 which is actually a torque oriented motor   . |

im also one of the bugs are bugs type, they all have the same overall shape and character
i have to admit that early vws have a lot more soul
well visually anyway but for me ride quality and saftey rules over looks
i couldnt live with shitty brakes, tractor suspension and terrible electrics
ive owned several of each, standards, flat screen supers, curved supers but ill never go back to a standard as the torsion bar front end is just too agricultural and has major limitations, where as the strut front end can be developed so much further
theres a good reason nearly all passenger cars manufactured today are still using mcpherson struts
i also prefer the curved screen supers.
that 42% larger windscreen just makes such a difference in so many ways, i almost feel claustrophobic in a flatscreen now, windscreen wipers that actually do a good job, flat screen wipers are fucking useless and leave big areas un wiped, but the best aspect is the aerodynamic properties curved screen has
theres a good reason nearly all germanlookers are 1303s |

I think even a "little" 180hp IO-360 would just about twist a Bug in half!
Then again, there is that Merlin-powered '55 Chevy (resembles a Chevy, anyway) out there...
Stupid lottery. All these great ideas, unrealized! |

the strut front end *needs* to be developed "much further"... I find the "torsions suck and struts are better" argument silly... the strut front suspension in the super beetles is a crude and weak design from the factory. The torsion front suspension is very robust, low maintenance, and wears well over the years. It is a more "heavy duty" design, and torsion bars are still common in todays vehicles that need a more robust suspension. I've owned both supers and standards. At this point my standard has no torsion bars at all.
Buggin_74 wrote:

that's a silly statement... the major reason is they are compact and cheap to manufacture. Secondary is that they provide a very "comfortable" ride.. In todays passenger cars handling is only a small concern of the manufacturers of high volume cars.
Buggin_74 wrote:

there are many reasons, good or bad depends on your perception. the major reason most German look cars are 1303's is the same reason that has plauged the vw "community" for 40 years, folks see it, like it, then copy it... |

I think its all personal preference - here's my pros and cons
Pro Super -
1. Easier to find and cheaper.
2. If suspension is in good shape, or you know how to fix them, they handle very well and just feel real good. Almost feel like a modern car.
3. More modern conveniences
4. Nicer seats.
5. Much better trunk space.
Con Super (for me)
1. Don't care for the look. And thats true for any Type 1 67 and up. Vertical headlights, curved windshield and dash, high backs and overall shape.
2. I don't know the front suspension. Already dealing with link/swing and ball joint/IRS. That's enough for me.
3. Feels too much like a new car - part of the charm for me is driving a little more "primitive" car.
4. More difficult to work on (more electronics, lights, beepers, etc, possible fuel injection. Emissions controls.
A lot of it is just that there are different systems to learn and many don't want to bother. I don't.....well at least for now. |

| I find them very ugly. I had a friend that had a 74 super that I rode around in. I did not like it. The earlier the better in my opinion. But this is just my opinion. I am glad folks out there like supers because if it were a bunch of myselfs out there, all the supers would die in a field and I would not want that ever. |
