Ive had my 73 super for almost 10 years. I would not trade it for the world. It was my first car and my daily driver for many years. I love the dash and the rear tailights. I have often wondered why many of the pre 68 owners ( especially 67 owners) are snobs to the newer cars. I just say F*CK them and let my 2276 do the talking.

im a closet super fan.
i liked my old 74, rusted flintstone mobile and all. absolutly loved my old 71, but couldnt keep 3 cars going at the time, and i just couldnt give up on one of my 67s (bug and bus) so i sold the 71. i do want to find another 71/72 super someday though.
my old 71 handling characteristics even with worn out front end parts, was like night and day over my 67 bug. be awesome to build a nice road cruiser for the twisties using the super as a base someday. |

I have nothing against supers, I just hate the round tail lights (the big ones) and also the padded steering wheel.
Thats just me. |

Bummer, because that's the only view you'll get of my car.
BTW... it's not a Super. |

I've had a '65, and now a '71 Super, both low miles and in good shape. I also have a '73 std. that's well worn.
A '65 is nice as a vintage collectible but not a great daily driver. I had mine in '69 and it was my daily driver. Cold and no defrost even when new. I pushed it and it rolled. 6 Volt sucked. Single circuit brakes suck for a DD.
The '73 was more comfy heat and defrost wise and better lights etc. (12 Volt) A lot of improvements. I liked the metal dash better though.
My '71 Super that I drive now is by far the best. Handles way better than the stds. and apparently better than many new cars that can't seem to keep up to me in the corners. 86% bigger trunk is nice and I can still get at the wiring from in the trunk which is a big reason I don't like '73 up Supers.
Also in '71 they still hadn't added a lot of the annoying stuff like seat belt warning system, the newer ugly steering wheel, the column mounted wiper switch, EGR, FI, diagnostic wires everywhere, can't get to fuel sender w/out removing tank, and toggle switches.(yuk)
So if I wanted a vintage collectible to drive on nice days, a pre '67, but as my year round DD in frosty Canada I would always chose a '71 or '72 Super. Also I'm getting older and enjoy the minimal comforts in a Super. Love my gas heater!!

I have a 68 standard with a '72 1641dp. I don't mind supers at all, I have a lot of VW friends around here who have supers, rusty, but still supers. I really just like the feel and look of the older style steering wheel, and while the tail lights got bigger for safety, I cleaned the terminals on my smaller tail lights and they went from hardly visible to like a new car! makes a world of a difference. But if I had a later model, I would probably feel that way just because my car is my car, and I love it. It carries me places.
And really is one of my best friends. |

the "72 1641" isn't a 72 1641 at all...it's simply a 72 engine with oversized pistons and cylinders.... adding the "72" has no effect.... i've yet to see a vw in Radford more than once every couple months, so are there really that many vw folks there? i'm in Radford 4-5 days per week. |

Funny you don't see us, there is me and another flat black bug, but his is a '69 with a 1500sp, and there is a green super with a 1600dp, a 71 super with a 1641, and I drive mine well over 200 miles a week. Send me a pm if you ever wanna meet up and talk Vw. |

71 has the classic steering wheel with the D ring, and that's my favorite. Before I got the 72, I hated the four spoke steering wheel, but now I can live with it.
Also, I didn't like the standards until we got a 74 standard for my friend. Now I like them too. I think that when you drive a specific model, you will like it, because it's a beetle. |
