hello samba! ive been reading around the forums for awhile now while taking out the interior of my 69. all of the headpeice was original and very crusty. i just ripped most of it out, but kept all the rods and things.

isnt she pretty?

well, not really, if you take a closer look at the innards.

gaping hole in right front floorpan (very handy for a cigg butt disposal while working on interior)
there was just a peice of 2mm sheetmetal sitting over it, under the mats, and somehow it passed safety (i doubt legally)

s'more holes behind driver seat

rustified behind backseat, too!

a glance at the engine

oh, and theres a few peices missing here, but i cant seem to figure out what this peice is called, it has to do with idle and choke (or something).
only reason i know theyre even missing is they were there when i bought it and not when i parked it in my garage. haha.

so. my plan was to grind off all the rust and strip all the paint and redo everything, but with such big holes in the floor pans ill probably need to get new ones. suggestions?
ive looked a little in to POR-15 and was wondering if that would work if i just patched the pans and slathered that stuff everywhere.

also, one of my buddies thinks it might just be easier to dip my car in solvent or something to get all the rust and paint off. is that even possible/not insanely expensive?

im also planning on lifting the body off to sand, grind, and paint. do you need to take out the engine to lift the body?\

after body and/or engine is off, im gonna replace all the fuel. oil and brake lines, and probably replace the tank completely if its too rusty to salvage.

then comes complete cleaning and lubing the entirety of the engine (i used to take apart diesel engines and put them back together for a living, this much i can handle, but suggestions and comments are wonderful always.

this is me, my socket wrench, hand grinder, and haynes manual asking for a few pointers.

The fast Idle cam is missing ,, The thing that holds the throttle open while the heat unit heats up .. the white thing on the other side,,, ( choke element )

also see that black line coming from the manifold to the air cleaner,, that's wrong... just plug that line off... The way it is now,, it's the same as having a hole in the intake manifold ( vacuum leak )

and it's missing the seals around the heat ducts,, the big black flex tube,, and the metal seal plates on the preheat tubes..

to fix those holes with por 15 or anyother product like that,, you would have more money invested in por 15 than what it would cost to have a body shop replace the pans and repaint the car ....

keep in mind all that por 15 does is cover up the rust,, so you don't see it.. it's still there and eating away the metal..

hm, well i cant find a fast idle cam on any product sites. ill look around more.

and ive no idea where the manifold or air cleaner are haha. mspaint some arrows?

im thinking the best idea would be to get new floorpans altogether and just grind away other rust and por-15 + paint over that.

random thought, would it be feasible to make custom fiberglass floorpans? i have all the tools that would be needed

Bashr52 Sun May 18, 2008 4:57 am

you can buy fiberglass replacement pans, so yes you can do it and its been done (not sure if i'd suggest it though)

Looks like a lot of work, but worth every bit when you get finished. Keep posting progress pics!

Have fun!

pulled off the other fender today, had some trouble with a few bolts that had rusted through, and the previous owner had put huge 9/16 bolts with like 3 washers each that were completely rusted. had to grind them off, but no damage to the fender.

then i noticed this

the front quarter panel is almost completely rusted off of the rest of the body here, and some idiot who owned the car before me Bondo'd right over the rust of some damage around the lid seal. i'll need to replace the quarter panel.
im thinking with this.

also, im amazed i didnt die trying to drive this from the owners house, as you can see the main fuel line just broke when i pulled the tank (i didn't notice a tug or anything) and theres a random bar hanging loose. what is that?

Given the front end damage, and the flooring, it would take a *lot* of time and money to get that thing right.

Part it out, hopefully you'll get your money back.

i disagree at this point, floor pans are easy to restore, and the front end damage is about $200 in a new quarter panel and apron. everything else is pristine

raekaikoli Sun Jun 01, 2008 12:41 pm

could i install a later model wiper motor on this? say, a 70+, sell the orig... it is the stock wiper motor from 69, so its pretty nice.

old wipers (note the PO painted all over these. they spray painted the entire exterior, with aerosol cans. bah.)
