Hey Mike,

Maybe we'll see you up there. We're taking off from Portland in a couple of weeks and plan to drive around Alaska for a couple of months over the summer in our '58 Panel. Recently returned from a few months in Mexico and are looking forward to the change in scenery.

Dam sorry i missed this untill today  I have lived just outside of anchorage for 33 yrs, Drove the road in just about everything with wheels, I mostley fly it the last 20 yrs. I live 1/2 mi off the main hiway so I hope you stop. ( I am sure something will need to be fixed) The alcan is a pice of cake today ( When we drove our westy up in 75 it was mostley gravel) I would come up the Cassier if i was you. It is the prettyest part of BC. or anywere in the world as far as that goes.. I will PM you my P#.. Read the story in June Hot vw...... Kevin

If your route from Idaho takes you North on US 93 to Montana, you will be going about a short mile from my place just South of Hamilton. You are most welcome to stay over night or whatever. Send me a PM and I can give you the particulars.

an alaskan finally chimed in! kevin, i have no excuse not to stop by. i'm sure you'll be hearing from me.

john, thanks for the offer. i'll keep you posted if i need a place to crash or fix something.

looking at the map, i may skip edmonton and drive through jasper national park instead.

Glad to see your dream hitting Alaska is clearly coming along. There's nothing like the people from the destination inviting and encouraging you. Cool.

Look at Jasper/Prince George/Smitters then up the Cassiar hwy, The east side of the Rockys are well how you say BORING, Jasper is steep but well worth it.The other way is up trough Wasington to Oakanogan B.C to Kamloops then Yellowknife hwy at Cache Ck. From there you are next to the Frasher River to Prince George then west to Smitters, Or come how ever the hell you like and on the return ride the State Ferry from Haines to Prince Repuret. from there you can back track the above route. But the Cassiar hwy is by far the best scenary north of Seattle including Alaska

Last time I drove to Alaska the Cassiar Highway was dirt but covered with calcium cloride, a kind of stuff to keep the dust down and not kill plants. Always stop, get way over, and let the trucks and motorhomes pass or you'll break a windshield. The drive to Fairbanks and Anchorage is one long mother of a haul. The scenery on the Cassiar is almost tropical with cascades and mountains. After that it's endless road with 360 degree vistas of foreverness. Towns are far between but there are huge lodges all the way. They have food, rooms, camping, and stores. Almost every gas station I stopped at had a heated shower. There's at least one lake that takes 10 hours to pass. Makeshift fur sellers have bearskins, wolf, fox, and you name it for sale plus there's the Hudson Bay Traders. Chevron gas stations were everywhere but be sure to fill up when you can and carry a gallon extra. Want more?

according to several sources that i just read, the unpaved sections consist of two 12 mile long stretches. the official BC website says starting in 2006, these stretches were being paved and will continue to be paved until completed. considering i've driven well more then 24 miles on rough dirt road, it seems like a piece of cake. every web site does say it's one of the most scenic and isolated parts of BC. sounds like fun.

Yeah, getting paid $25/hr cash fabricating a dropped suspension for my Dad's electric car! He's going to have the fastest DC electric in the U.S. at a whopping 45mph :)! I could still possibly go especially if you posponed the date you leave and I just rode as a co-pilot. Might be difficult since you must be wanting to avoid any kind of severe winter conditions... My bus is in good mechanical shape, but the gearing is low and the gas mileage ain't great. Need a custom geared tranny and some front beam work. Type 4 upright can take the haul. Jared just gave me a z-bed, too.

Call me sometime and we'll discuss the trip some more.

Sounds like a fun trip Mike, wish I could come along too. Let me know if you still need that roof rack from the s/c for the trip. Congrats on the new pooch, at least you'll have a co-pilot for the adventure.

Have a blast, Mike. If you cared to consider Sacramento as a rest stop, we'll be happy to lend your buddy a yard to run and a friendly dog to chase with.
