I might be wrong but I think it was part of the MFI system on GTI models.

and whas that new to the watercooled

Oh, what is the MFI? Also known as the MFA. It means Multi Function Indicator. That's The little computer on the dashboard on GTI/GLI models that displays stuff like outside temperature, oil temperature, trip meter, and it also "computes" an estimate of your fuel economy. It does this by monitoring your manifold vacuum and comparing it to your RPM and trip meter.

ah ic well thats cool i guess just need to figure out what it plugs in to now

Was your car equipped with MFI from the factory? Do you have the MFA switch on the column? Adding it to a car that wasn't so equipped is kind of difficult from what I've heard. I did a quick search on the watercooled site Vw Vortex and found this thread

i dont really know for sure. the rerason i ask is because my cluster in my car now is pretty much beat to crap by the po. to the extent to where i was needing to purchase a new .while i had the cluster out i noticed a lil vdo deal with a vacum line just kinda hangin out in the dash not hooked up to anything.well i have gotten a new cluster the other day from someone i work with and i noticed the same piece actually attached to the back of the cluster its self so was kinda wonderin if i could get it to work on my car, also by chance now how to turn back the milage so it actually meets what my car has lol

Yeah it can be done, you have to get into the speedometer.

One issue that watercooled speedometers have is the little plastic gear that sits on and drives the shaft that the odometer numbers around, it either cracks or wallows out - either one will put the odometer out of commision. On my Golf this was the case when I got it, it had wallowed out. So I took the speedometer out, and popped the gear off and then used a sharp pair of pliers to "knurl" the shaft and pressed the gear back on. While I was there I set the milage to what a previous owner estimated the car had on it. This was like 6.5 years ago so I'm not rmembering this 100%, but I think to to that I bent out the metal that held that whole shaft and the numbers in place, so I could get it away from interlocking gearing and spin the numbers around til they read 170000 and then lined them back correctly with the interlocking gears, bent that bracket back in place, popped the gear back onto the shaft.

anyone?

I don't know offhand. You might try searching around on the Vortex site. It's a manifold pressure but I'm not sure which exact location it needs to be hooked up to.

The vacuum line connects to a group of them that come off of the intake manifold, they are located right above the ignition coil.
