Hi,
I`m wanting to use a Porsche combination oil pressure/temperature gauge in my Beetle
I was wondering if there is a problem using these in a Käfer. Can I use standard VDO senders, do I have to use Porsche senders and how are they, as in how to install in a Beetle.
I`m grateful if you take the time to answer this, |

| You can use standard VDO senders. Pressure goes in the oil light sender on the upper side of the case below the left of the distributor, temp sender screws into the center of the drain plate. Easy Peasy! |

The reason I ask is an ebay ad, claiming that the oil pressure/temp would not show correct.
For those that understand German:
"Im Kombi-Instrument (Öl-Temp. Öldruck) wurde das Innenleben vom normalen 52er VDO Instrumenten verbaut somit funktioniert die Öltemperaturanzeige mit einem normalen VDO Temperaturgeber 0-150 Grad. Un die Öltemperaturanzeige funktioniert mit der normalen VDO Druckdose (Orginal Porsche funktioniert nicht damit , zeigt somit falsch an )" |

Folks use 914 combination gauges and VDO after-market senders all the time in their Speedster replicas. Just a matter of choosing the sender with the correct resistance or whatever. Best to determine what the gauge requires and contact VDO for the correct part number, then source it from one of the usual suspects.
A little "leg work" is all it'll take . . . |

Thank you for the time to reply!
I will do as said, and check with some boiling water and another pressure gauge.
ps: does anyone know which combination gauge that has green lettering and numbered both temperature and pressure? 356,911, 912 what year? |

The "green" gauges with one pieve chromed bezels came in the 356A, 356B and 356C, from 1956 to 1965. The Pre-A 356s had a different face entirely, but shared the chromed bezel.
The early cars in the next series 911/912 also had "green" gauges but with a two piece chromed and black bezel.
The 914 had similar gauges but with black face/white lettering. They first had a black version of the 356 bezel and later a n all black version of the two piece bezel.
Obviously LOTS of off-the-shelf sharing of parts through the years and model ranges.
I'm SURE that there's more here, but I only know enough about Porsches to get myself in trouble or debtors prison. |
