Ready for tear down

This is the old rail that I have been working on for two years. This started out as a parts rail that i have been piecing together. It runs perty good but the frame is to small for suspention seats so got a new frame and will move many parts to the new one.

Nice frame. It looks like the a arm version only fits the VW front end.

Florida_Buggy Tue May 27, 2008 7:56 am

I love the look of the new frame!

Cleaned up the old housing and it is marginal for a new frame, so had to order the pieces for a new one. I also picked up a new battery box since I was there (Foddril). The new rear trailing arms sould be here from Blind Chicken Racing any day (I hate waiting). I will be ordering new front trailing arms at the begianing of the month from Tweeds.

like the new frame where did you get it from.

vdubduner Tue May 27, 2008 4:15 pm

looks like a sandlimo squirt.

crazyman1 Tue May 27, 2008 6:13 pm

I like the old frame. what ya going to do with it?

jbrooking Tue May 27, 2008 7:15 pm

Put the new beam in tonight. It's 10" wide with a sleeve. The new frame is a Sand Limo Squirt Plus. The old frame is a Prowlers HI-JUMPER. I have the frame, CV's, axles, seats w/covers, front beam and front and rear trailing arms, and everything else I'm not using. It will all go for sale as I see what I need and don't need. I have a plan (budget) so we will see how it goes.

I like your old frame. I can tell by the background you dont live anywhere near me. If you did I would love to buy your old frame.

jbrooking Wed May 28, 2008 7:56 pm

Got the front end pieces cleaned and put together today. I just put the old arms on as I'm not shure if I will buy the front arms right away. I think I should maybe buy a new radiator first. I can easly upgrade the arms later but the rad is hard to upgrade later as the mounts are part of the frame. I am making my tie rods a little shorter, is it better to sleeve or cut and tap. If cut and tap is the answer what size threads are the stock ends (maybe 13 mm) or where I can find a tap? The largest I can find is a 12mm. I know that everyone wants to use hiems or international ends but the old stockers have held up for 10 years. So I just bought new ones and will use the old as spares.

It will be for sale soon but would cost alot to ship. I checked on prices for shiping from Kentucky and shiping was more than the knock down frame price. I do live in Phoenix, AZ if anyone local is intersted.

hey Jb, just a quick question about your steering. your running the stock steering in the center. does this work out good? did you run it this way on your old rail? I cant tell from the pics. how does it feel? just like stock i would imagine. just curious because i was gonna pick up a r&p this weekend. but im kinda iffy on it because people say some are touchy on the street. unless you buy the REAL expensive ones. just curious i guess. oh did you say your beam was 10 over stock, cause thats what im running.

thanks
Jose

CRISIS68 I don't know but it should be similar to stock. R&P's usualy have a very Quick ratio and can get twichy and hard to steer Bumpsteer should be better with it mounted in the middle as both tierods will be the same length. I have seen this setup before as well as chevy power steering on older rails. The old timers say it worked great. Plus I am always looking to do things on a budget and this way is much less $. I ran mine stock in the original location on the old car and beat the sh.t out of it. My beam is a 6" wider that I made 4" wider as I could not find a 10" wider with adjuster. Where did you get yours?

You know the germans are the greatest engineers in the world. They may design things weird, but how many volkswagons are still on the road and have been running for all these years. You dont see upgraded parts out there that have been working for 50 years. Stock may not always have the coolest look, but you cant beat it for dependability and cost.

you know, honestly I never even thought about using my stock steering box. until i saw jb using his. i guess i was just caught up in the hype of using a r&p. and all the aftermarket parts...

jb, I got my beam out of the classifieds. i was planning on using the torsions for a while but ended up getting 4 over arms so that went out the door. so now i have a full set of torsions if you ever need them.

thanks
Jose

i have actually never seen a stock box used centered like that, its a good idea, ill keep it in mind.

keep us updated on how it works out.

Thanks for the kudos, You will find through this build that I dont always use the most convetinal methodes. I like the nostalgia of building it with what I have avalible. My friends always make fun at me when I tell them what redneck thing Im doing next, but my car always makes it home. I usualy have to help them get there cars (Jeeps) back to camp as they only know how to buy parts.
I worked on the tie rods today. The stock threads are 14mm 1.50 and taps that size are very expensive ($60) for right hand only. So I went old school and cut the new ones I bought (2 pasanger sides) sleeved them with some 1/2 bar stock, and welded them back together. There are pics of the process in the gallery. These will not bend unless I'm dead!!!

Then I started working on the shifter linkage as I am now waiting on parts to build the torsion housing. If they are not here by weekend I will tear the motor down for a detail.
