Contact Matt Ross. He's been restoring semaphores for over a decade now: http://www.mattsparts.com/

Drill out the rivet(s) holding the bottom end bracket of the coil, it slips right out.

I will give that a try hope i will be able to put it all together!..by the way how can i know if my semaphores are SWF or SHO?

can you see that wire disconnected from the coil?..do i have to remove everthing to reattach that again?

Thanks

from your picture it looks like the wire to the light bulb in the arm.

this runs from one of the bottom posts, under the coil over the hinge pivot and up the arm to the bulb. it's a cloth covered wire but in some cases (inc yours by the looks of things) the cloth degrades leaving just the bare wire.

yep that cloth disintagrated and even the wire it came disconnected..how can i attach the wire under the coil?

johnshenry Fri Jul 04, 2008 6:33 am

It is possible to slip a wire down the channel under the coil without removing it, but with the cloth wire it is tricky as the cloth wrap wants to slide back. I have done it however. If you have a very small, thin piece of heat shrink tubing you can slip over the end and shrink it, it helps.

I restore the earlier sems and have the cloth wire. Send me a self addressed stamped envelope and I'll send you a new piece if wire. Shoot, I guess I could put a piece of heat shrink on the end before I send it. Once you push it through, just clip the heatshrink off.

Do not mean to hijack but what do you use to wrap the coil with as my coil covering has degraded?

johnshenry Fri Jul 04, 2008 9:16 am

I use a red cloth tape, its available from bookbinding suppliers. I just looked at my notes and it doesn't look like I saved the URL from the place I ordered it from. You have to find 3' wide stuff (coil wrap is 60mm), I recall finding lots of sources for 2" wide, but 3" was harder to find. Google it....

Looks like I ordered in '07 from this place but I don't see it on their site now. I sent them an e-mail asking them if they still had it.

thanks john your great..i have both cloth wire and shrinkable tubing thats a good idea..but were does this wire connect to under the coil?

johnshenry Fri Jul 04, 2008 3:39 pm

It comes out the bottom and connects to the lower terminal. A coil winding wire also connects there. Look at the plate at the top of the coil and you should see a notch on on corner. The wire goes down that side.

Matt's Bug Parts Sat Jul 05, 2008 12:12 pm

At Matt's Parts we use 100% cotton (Black or Red) - set a bead of white glue along the length of the coil - on the underside and set down the cloth (cut to size of course) and let it dry. Then we set a bead of white glue along the length of the coil-on the underside (now on the cotton), wrap the cloth around the coil and set it in the glue - pull it tight, and let it dry.

Then we liberally, with a brush, apply Dolph's clear electrical lacquer for water proofing.
