View original topic: Is this shifter broken?

First experience with a vanagon (this is a 1988) and waiting for the bentley to arrive.

It looks to me like a finger or something similar might be broken off on the driver's side (right side in pic). Can anyone confirm or deny? If it is broken, can you sell me a good one?

Also, anyone sell a rebuild kit for the back by the transmission? I found one for the front stuff, but need the rear bushings and whatever else wear parts.

Not sure about the first question about it being broke or not. The rebuild shifter kit is available at Volks-Cafe at http://www.volkscafe.com/vanagon_parts.jsp?ct=355838710&pa=pct&pct=422400270

There's nothing in that shift rebuild kit that will help your situation.
The plastic tabs on the sides are gone, and van cafe doesn't sell that front arm.
It's a one-piece deal, about 3-4 feet long.
Did you take off the box, that surrounds this part of the linkage, for the photo, or is it missing?
I've heard of people attempting to re-glue some sort of plastic composite onto the ends of those knobs.

Hmm. So the metal part is okay, but there are plastic bits missing? Anywhere to get those? Or instructions to make new ones?

I did remove the cover thing, it wasn't missing.

the ones I know that attempted some sort of attachment, as far as I remember, those attachments didn't last long.
that I know of, the only option is to get a complete front arm.

If you click on the link given by rhinoculips, you'll see a notation about this at the bottom of the page, at the end of the section titled "shifter box"

Back from the dead!

The part number for the selector shaft is 251 711 271D. Its #13 as found here: http://etka.auto2.ru/epc/cat/vw/T2/1985/4/55/59024/

I looked at mine tonight and the little upright thing that handles R-1-2 is GONE, as in no plastic, no metal. GONE  Though the 3-4 side is still there and looking great.
Hooray for being able to feel it into 1st and 2nd...I think.

Ill call the dealer monday and get a quote, i have a feeling my wallet is going to be much lighter. Ill have to check at some breaking yards tomorrow too.

Oh yeah, it looks like BD doesnt have them listed anymore :( Anyone from BD want to correct me?

...Hang on a sec: 1stvwparts.com has it. $110 list, $80.65 is their price.
