I don't have it yet. I have to get the $$ and then they will drop it off, but I put down a small deposit on it. I have a 1974 (my avatar) and wanted to start on a project fresh. This is a solid car that has already had the pans replaced. The 6V electrical should be interesting.
So anyone here from NY? It was news to me, but the NYS DMV website confirms that they don't issue titles for cars before 1972. They issue a "transferrable registration". Does anyone have experience with that? They say that they have all the paperwork (including the original title), but I'm looking for someone here who has dealt with this in NY. |

| There is not title. You just need a bill of sale and the previous owners paperwork. |

Instead of a title, after proof of purchase when you get the car registered in N.Y. you get a registration card that looks like any other except for the statement on it that says transferable with a place on the back to fill out who the new buyer is if and when you sell it. Look at any current car's reg now, it is printed with the statement non-transferable.
I recommend that when you get yours you keep the original safely tucked away somewhere at home and make copies, one for your wallet and one to put in your glove box in case you need to show it (traffic stop etc). Your allowed to do this. The reg itself is your quasi title, so protect it accordingly. |

cool. So if they didn't actually register it in their name when they bought it, would they just need to provide me the paper trail from the original owner to them to me? It's not a driver, it's to be restored - that's why I'm thinking that they may not have registered it.
I'll be talking with them again tonight, so I want to make sure I know the right questions to ask and what to expect. all I've done so far was to put a small deposit down.
They gave me the VIN, it was produced Jan 1964 and was originally red. 8) |

since they're local and have their own transport, I'll have it this week. It's more dependent on when I can get the money. I will have plenty of pictures!
I wonder if I'm worrying too much about the title. It's a 64 and they have all the paperwork. What's the worst case? It's an out-of-state title and they lost the sales receipt from when they bought it and they didn't register it in their name. then what could I do if I still want the car? Would Broadway title be able to help in that case?
edit: I couldn't wait, so I called the seller. Original title is CT. They have the bill of sale from the original owner to them and the original owner is local. I don't know what else I could need. The VIN matches the title. |

I got it. :) The interior was stacked with "junk", including brand new hear exchanger boxes.
This thing has some serious documentation. Even has some kind of original VW "credit card" looking thing, in immaculate condition, with it that they used on the dealer receipts.
The full set of pics are here (where you can see them in huge size):
