Found this article, sort of interesting. Lots of crappy ads and stuff, though.

Welcome to Ed Roth.

Plaster instead of foam, but same process. I like the ass end of the car. The front leaves a bit to be desired. Looks like his bodywork is pretty damn nice too.

Keith Mon Jun 02, 2008 7:09 pm

Alot of cars were built that way. Like stated before "Big Daddy" Ed Roth was a master at it in the 60's. He used plaster but others like mark Moriarity's "Futurian" were built with foam as it was cheaper than plaster.

Here's a few links:

If you look closely at Roth's stuff though, it's all shit. I mean, it was/is cool and everything...but there wasn't a damn thing straight or symmetrical on any of his cars. I think the Outlaw was the worst, but the Beatnik Bandit wasn't much better. The builder above actually looks talented in the construction of, if not the design of the car.

i would love to see this thing get into an accident and explode

this picture does actually kind of look like that guy who was trying to make that custom car with the sound system using particle board and foam

Cut Big Daddy some slack. He was doing things that had never been done before w/o templates or molds - all by hand and by eye.

Mona Lisa's smile isn't symmetrical but she's a classic work of art nonetheless.

I love his stuff and I respect the guy for what he was. He was a showman...a promoter. He was really good at it too. As far as his art or his building skills, he just wasn't that good.

Its easy to knock Big daddy's talent until you try to do this stuff your self. And as already stated, he was one of the first, so its not like he had any standards to live up to.

Nice fabrication or crappy build, he's still way more famous then any of us will ever be. So before you go blasting the legend, how about posting some of your own work so we can all see where your qualifications are to be a critic!

That's the same thing I thought of when I saw this pic!

When's the last time you saw a movie critic who's actually written or directed a movie? When's the last time you saw a fashion critic who dresses worth a shit? I'm qualified because from the comfort of my office chair here...I say I'm qualified.

Um...maybe because its SUPPOSED to be off to one side? The D-Type Jag had a wing on only one side of the body but I think it still looks pretty cool.

Sure, if you look at Roth's work close up it's not going to compare to a fiberglass Vette that had just rolled off the line, but Big Daddy's idea was to create art with his cars. May not be perfect but his impact can't be denied.

You are right, but unfortunately, your comments about Big Daddy Roth are about as irritating as most movie and fashion critics. The guy was a pioneer who did a lot for the car culture. And while his stuff may not have been as nice as some of the others like Von Dutch, he still deserves respect until you can do better then he did.

And I don't like movie critics either and who gives a rats ass about fashion critics?

As far as I'm concerned, being a critic simply means you have NO talent.

Von Dutch!? Christ, I could start a whole new thread on that hack.

Roth's stuff was cool, I got no problem with that. Like I said, he was a promoter. He'd throw some crazy contraption together (shit, he almost killed somebody with the Rotar) and then market the hell out of it. Revell would make it into a model and kids everywhere would buy it. George Barris (his brother Sam had all the talent) was no better. It's just my opinion. My idols are people like Sam Barris or Harry Westergard, who basically invented the tail dragger look. Those guys made beautiful cars, not carnival rides.
