I have a 2001 turbo beetle and the timing belt broke. What am I looking at in terms of damage that may have been done to the head or pistons. VW dealer says $5,500 to replace it and the head. Also the book says to check it at 60,000 miles and replace it at 105,000. The ckecking was done and it was ok now has 90,000 on it and it broke. Book also says powertrain warranty is 10 years or 100,000 miles. What are my chances of VW repairing this.

Do you have proof that it was checked at the scheduled maintenance? If it's under 100,000 miles, I would think they would cover it. If the dealer says no, I would write to VW and complain. I personally would never let a timing belt go to 105,000 miles. Even if they do recommend that. Too much risk!
