First off, it's not my fault I got stationed in this godforsaken place called the San Jaoquin Valley; it was the Navy that sent me here. Maybe if they had sent me to San Diego I'd have a different opinion than I do, but as of now I'm thoroughly sick of California and can't wait to leave. I'm originally from Wisconsin, so cold weather doesn't bother me much, but the heat sorta gets to me.

That being said, I just found out I'm finally leaving the Seventh Layer of Hell, in favor of Oceana, VA. I've been to VA before, but it was springtime, and all it did was rain. What can I expect as the season progresses? Is winter a PITA?

And the all important question: what's the local VW chapter?
Gotta hook up with the local VW folk and stay in the game, so to speak.

Any other info about the Oceana area will be appreciated; nutty laws, bad ass bars to hang out in, best place to possibly buy a house, whatever. Give me your input.

Thanks!

"YESSSss my friend….. The west coast is a total shit hole. Especially Washington and Oregon…Go back to the beautiful Virginia... Tell your all your friends back home to stay there…"

Virginia is nice. It will be humid through the summer, but you can always count on at least a month of nice weather before summer, and then maybe another month after summer.

You at least get the 4 seasons most of the time. It is a pretty nice place to live overall.

VA sucks.

I'm out in three weeks!

They have a Navy in the Valley? What do you do, patrol the California Aqueduct?

obviously, they were trying to tell you something. it gets hot and humid in virgina, and yes, it also snows. I lived in Woodbridge, VA (just outside od DC) for a year and really didn't mind it.

PicklePickle Wed Jun 11, 2008 6:16 am

I was born and spend most of my childhood in VA and love it. Though I haven't lived there in 20 years, I have visited a few times during that period. My only problem with VA is the cold in the winter (because I am a total wuss when it comes to cold--I hate it) and the horrible taxes and state laws.

However, since you are coming from Cali, I would expect that even those issues in comparison will make you think you've died and gone to heaven! :D

LOL

Take a few friends with you!

I was stationed at Oceana for training. Lived on bologna sandwiches most of the time because I was sending my paychecks to my cheating bitch wife in Jacksonville so she could "pay the bills".

Va beach is cold in January, and the bologna selection is mediocre at best.

It's an Airstation.

Lemoore is just like Oceana. Same thing different place as far as the NAS' is concerned. Go hang out on the local beach. Not too bad in the summer, and not too far away. It's full of people on liberty and turist, so you have a few issues when alcohol is added. There is street signs that say @#$& prohibited, so watch your Sailor mouth and you will be alright. It was nice having you in California, you will be missed.

But first and foremost it's a crap hole.

Judging CA by the Central Valley is a bad mistake. I hope you at least traveld a little while you were here and saw a few things.

It's hot as hell here with the humidity. It was 110 with the humidity yesterday. It was F'n miserable out in the sun. Most days during the summer it looks like it's snowing because of the pollen. In the winter it's real cold but we only get snow a few times a year. It rained alot here for the last few months but seems that it's over with now. As for the VW scene, there is NO VW scene.

I would move to Virginia if they would rename it Vagina. That would be awesome!

Migit Wed Jun 11, 2008 8:26 pm

I was in Compton.... I mean HAMPTON for 5 years when I was in the Air Farce and the only thing that I can say is this. One winter it snowed 4" Yes that is FOUR INCHES and they closed EVERYTHING for 3 days. I was in my 71 beetle and got a ticket by one of Hamptons finest for too fast for conditions, doing 35 in a 45 on Mercury BVD. They trucked in Snow plows from around DC, 6 of them if I remember right, and they plowed in a straight line, one after the other! The plow drivers ran over fences, porches, a house or two, it was crazy! Watch out for the NorEasters, they whip up the surf in Va Beach so bad you can't see the storefronts.
For Bars hit up Harpoon Larrys, its a really good raw bar with 3 or 4 locations, or HOOTERS, there seems to be one about every 4 miles down there. Most of the GOOD bars have been closed down or shuttered AND you have to deal with the ABC, state run liquer stores. Hit up the Class Six on base as much as you can, if you have to go to "Nawfawk" or Langley so be it, they have the best deals. STAY AWAY FROM FORT USELESS, I mean EUSTIS! You have been warned and I will not comment any further.
