The Tulare County Fair is coming up in September:

This weekend they had the Central California Automotive Swap Meet:

There's some pretty serious sprint car racing coming up on the 28th:

Or you could go to Fresno for the truck show:

The Fresno site has lots of things to do:

Want some culture? The California State Honor Band performs in Fresno in February. Those are the top musicians in the state!

I guess you can be bored anywhere. Imaging your complaints if you had been stationed in Fallon, or China Lake! :)

"Fresno" and "Culture" cannot be used in the same sentence.

A truck show, tractor display and a maching band are hardly considered entertainment, at least west of the Rockies.

Those who would judge "culture" should know the difference between a marching band and a wind symphony! Hint: These people _aren't_ marching!

"Culture" is where you find it, but I really doubt that our Navy friend is looking for Van Goghs and Brahms. Complaining about his problem on an automotive forum indicates that he might well enjoy a tractor show or similar event.

YEEE HAWWWW!

Seriously though, I do like having CB Performance practically in my backyard, I know most of the people there on a first name basis. Tom and Erin are really cool people, and if Pat wasn't so freaking busy all the time building engines, I might have gotten a chance to BS more with him than I have. They need a CB on the Easy coast, for sure.

For the record, I did have some fun times here; I did all the parks, went boating, snowboarding, camping, went to Pomona swap meet, drove to LA helluvalotta times... it's just that here in Lemoore, these are all things that require planning. One of the stipulations at work is that if you go more than 100 miles from home base, you have to leave written notification (won't have to anymore, I'm an E-6 now). That means you're supervisor, his boss, his boss's boss, and the boss's boss's mother all have to sign off on it before you can do anything.

Makes spur of the moment trips impossible, so a lot of the time I just packed up and left. I don't like doing that though, because the likelyhood of getting a call is high at seagoing commands. I just think that VA is a better fit for me at this point, and I really feel like even if the military hadn't sent me here, I'd still have left.

BTW, you're all right about my impression: I don't doubt that if I had gone to San Diego or Washington, my opinion would be different. But I didn't, and now it's too late. I'll never come back to the Valley, but if housing prices ever come back down out of the stratosphere, I'd consider living in either Socal or Norcal. Even if Norcal is in fact gay. Yes that includes Chico. 8)

As it stands, the size house I'm looking to buy is easily $120k cheaper in VA, so that makes the decision even easier.

at least that much.... and getting worse(better in your situation) weekly... check into forclosures, with property valued dropping some banks are over-run with forclosures and the houses aren't worth what they were... they are dumping them for cashflow at below market value...

That's what I've been hearing, so I'm hoping this will drop prices across the board and make a nice buyer's market (if it isn't already). It's nice to know I'll finally be able to afford my own place, I just hope I can stay in VA till it's paid off. I'd hate to buy a home, then have to turn around and sell 3 years later because of a transfer.

yeah, longer term stationing would be a benefit... the property values are dropping(good for buying), and that could mean a temporary loss after purchase... but it actually happens about ever ten years or so, and always comes back stronger than before... being in the housing market, folks like me welcome the "downturn" because it weeds out all the jacklegs in the business... my property value, and many in Va have not been affected YET, but it could happen.... despite the slow movement of the property values the resale values are dropping, sometimes by quite a bit....

Hmm... Sounds like I'll have to jump at exactly the right time if I want the best price, and if I also don't want the house to lose value after purchase due to downturn. To be perfectly honest, it wouldn't bother me a whole lot if the prices kept dropping after I bought, because the houses in VA are really reasonable compared to CA. Besides, after the drop there's only one place value can go- back up.

Just don't stay too long!

You can always rent if you must transfer. That is how people build wealth. The more homes you buy (that can rent) while you're in the service, the better. Take advantage of the housing allowance and buy, buy, buy. Key to it is, buy near the bases and rent to military people with a small family. That is how i've been doing it and so far so good. Hiring a good property manager will save you lots of headaches in the long run too. C-yah!!!
