I will keep my F150 thanks, my last two Fords died well

#1 269,000 miles on it ( got rid of it after hitting a deer at 50mph

#2 head on collision (me going 35 person running from cops 40 - 60, I walked away mostly intact)

Would not have wanted to be in a toyota for the head on.

To bad the Tundra is built in the USA... Ford and Chrysler are junk, and would never own one. Horrible engineering, poor quality parts, takes Ford 5 attemps to give you a part that is not broken, defective, or chinsy.

GM would be the better choice for an American product. Remember the old saying: Ford: first the worst, GM:second the best.

My old 87 F150 with the 4.9L inline 6 had 260,000 miles and still passed smog and only had one fuel pump go out on it and thats it. Now my 05 ranger with the 3.0 v6, people say these are getting 200,000 miles on them, but I have only put 17,000 on mine so should last a long time.

Update: Thanks for all the input on the Tundra!
Its still at the dealer being totally dismantled!.
I had to get some tools out of it to survive and I shouldn't have seen
what I saw!

If its like everything else... that much disassembly and human error..
it will never run right again!

Oh well, life goes on but i feel really screwed by Toyota!

I just sold my 2000 Tundra. It had 180,000 miles on it and I never had any major problems. It did go in the shop once for a O2 sensor that was a factory recall. I did have a small problem with a engine noise. It sounded like an exhaust leak, that tap...tap...tap noise. I had it looked at everytime it was inspected and they didn't hear it and when I sold it the buyer had it inspected at his mechanic and he said it was good. As soon as I'm ready I'm buying a 2006 double cab Tundra. I'd rather have my old 2000 Toyota Tundra than the 2005 Chevy Silverado company truck. Lets just say I'm very happy my company has there own mechanic.

Update: friday aft.
I got a call from the Toyota mechanic and they said it was the number
7 wrist-pin.

Wrist-pin! When was the last time you had a wrist pin go out!

Wrist pins are almost considered a NO-WEAR item in this day and age.
I will attain more info as to if it was piston or pin itself.
Or more rare, con rod bushing?

Now in my eyes this lets me off the hook for lead-foot driving.

This engine was babied by me and I never hauled anything.

Toyota will be provided with documentation on this case and
I feel even more worked over by it not being anything that I had control of.

wow,i have a 2004 with about 90,000 hard miles by me.
i towed and hauled granite in it.
i have not been so religous with the oil change but i do use synth on it when it gets changed.
the pronlem i have is the tire light will not go out.
i realy like toyota and this is my second toyota truck and both had that light "tap" sound.
must have bought a monday or friday built truck.
i did but this truck january of last year and was consumer reports number one best buy truck.

My wifes car is a 04' 4Runner with the 4.7, so far 45k miles and no probs. i just bought an 08' Tundra Crewmax 4x4 with the 5.7, and I'll tell you what, the truck is awesome.

steven wood Sat Jun 14, 2008 5:14 am

I was told along time ago, the tap sound was coming from the valves and if you used Toyota brand oil filters that would go away. Something about how the filter was made differently from other oil filters. I never tried it.

UPDATE: 84k engine letdown...

After 12 days I got it back! Runs good and sounds good!

I was shown the piston and the small end rattled on the wrist pin.

#7 only and the mechanic said that this engine was extremely clean!

I have today presented all of my circumstances and paperwork to the CEO of american Toyota and await a response.

I elected to change the timing belt at this time since it was due at 90k anyway, and I now have an invoice of $8,400.

I will post later on Toyotas response and if they left me
blued and tattooed on this deal.

Good or bad this will all go to the tundra forum later.

beetleboy58 Sat Jun 21, 2008 9:20 am

so do you stll have your original engine or did they replace it and dissassemble yours for inspection. doesnt seem like pulling the motor and replacing a pin would be 9 grand.

junior55 Sat Jun 21, 2008 11:01 am

They gave me some options...

Used engine : no warrantee same labor. Time, condition? etc.

Rebuild engine : not usual proceedure, much hours labor, ? warrantee.

Suggested route was the way I went as the least amount of human
tinkering, the better. New short block.

I probably could have shade-treed this project but the truck is clean,
rust free and has potential to pay me back a little.

If toyota helps me on the new block, it will have been the right decision.

If not, its all on me.

Another factor is they already had it for initial inspection and are more credible on their documentation. Also the time factor for me, this is my
business truck.

The block they say is a lexus block $. 4500

Like a vase becomes a "vaaze" after you break it $...

I will finish out this story for those interested in toyotas loyalty under
questionable conditions.

My KIA Sorento has a 100K warranty on the drive line. I will probably trade it at about 99K. It works hard, towing a car trailer.
So far, the dealer hasn't asked me about the trailer hitch and the electric brakes on it. The brakes were installed by the dealer in Olympia, WA. I installed the hitch myself, when the dealer quoted $400 to install the hitch.

Not related to engine problems but fyi Tundra production is going to
stop at TMMI Toyota Indiana and the new plant in TX TMMTX is scaling
back. The Seqouia is almost extinct too, built in Indiana. Think small.

07-06-08 UPDATE:

Toyota refuses discount on my new engine shortblock. $4500.00
They stuck me for the entire amount ....

Not even a reply to 5 letters written to them! I had to call Cal/Totota.

Total $8,500.00 for a #7 wrist pin failure at 84k miles.

All other components and pins were baby clean and solid.

End-of story ! End of toyota forever for me !

MY ADVISE: Toyota / American is not the toyota of Japan, now just a
money making mass produced vehicle with no pride left in customer service or quality.

Am/Toyota should be an embarasment to Japanese Toyota.

So spin the wheel on quality, just like back in the 70's when buying an american product. No advantage at all to buy a toyota !

American standards have rizen due to the quality competition, so thats a good thing but toyota is sure fucking up lately.

God help you if you need a Jap part and now you most likely will need many parts!

Done deal....

Florida_Buggy Tue Jul 08, 2008 7:04 am

I'm sorry to hear they wouldn't cover at least a portion of the cost. If I read it right, the shortblock was $4500? You could've had a race engine built for that much, so you KNOW they have some room to discount that if they wanted to.

junior55 Tue Jul 08, 2008 11:40 am

I was really expecting them to discount the block after the dealer backed me up on the engine findings. The dealer did as I said, reduce the labor by about 800 but the 8400 is still the amount after that!

Toy-calif said the dealer discount is adequate!

Well... They could have created a super-satisfied customer by donating a
$200.00 block (which is about their real cost to make it)....

But they elected to prick-out...

Over the next 10 years I'm sure I can tell this story to a million or two people at the vw carshows and on the internet about my $ 8,400 wrist pin.
