man this could turn into one of the blown up debates like in the split beetle forum

perhaps they just stamped us models? if not the stamp I would guess would be EU?

I have had a lined tank for over two years. I do not know how long lining lasts. I have heard of poor jobs, etc breaking down and clogging up. I have not had to deal with any sediment at all and would do it again.

Looking good.

Not familiar with those debates and certainly not wanting to stir the pot....I have the VW birth certificate on the way. When I receive it I am expecting it will certainly shed some light on at least this SB and to prove ior disprove t is a Pigalle.

Were they marked coming from the factory as US or Euro and if they were what does the Euro stamp look like??? :-k
My 65 was also marked 'USA' in the same place, only it was hand written with a grease pencil.
Perhaps they switched to the stamp for 66; once Type3s were being exported to US dealerships in large numbers, rather than just an occasional tourist delivery.

It's a U.S. Spec Pigalle. I'm willing to bet.

The EU didn't exist yet. Different markets got different wiring and different specifications. USA was only supposed to get Deluxe models. Some Euro markets has different sidemarkers; some were parking lights, and some wired as turnsignals. France got yellow headlamps and bigger strange reflectors. German models had the TUV- mandated rear fog lamp. VW used lots of stamps and tags to designate vehicles destined for different countries.

That's a really nice looking Square, and if you keep going like you are, it should look as nice as that 57 Chevy. 8) Keep up the good work, and the pics. :D

Thanks Bob!!!

Since my last post I have adjusted the valves, installed all new tie rods, polished the one rocker molding I have, adjusted the front suspension by lowering one notch, sandblasted primed and painted some misc parts, had the gas tank boiled out and the radiator shop painted it. The paint work SUCKS real bad, so I will have to redo. I have on order a new steering dampener, gas tank filter, valve cover gaskets for the CB performance covers. Here are some more pics....

Gas tank

Misc parts

CB valve covers-I do not have a set of stock ones so these will have to do for now. They had so much grease on them you could not even see the fins. I soaked them then sandblasted primed and painted them. The top one is just blasted the bottom is raw unblasted.

Tie rods-the bottom left has the correct bend. I ordered them on Sunday and got them yesterday. Of course the inner drivers side is only one with a castle nut..all the rest have nylocks. I torqued them down but it is nice to have a cotter pin as backup. After I installed the tie rods I did driveway alignment, camber on the ball joints and toe in on the tie rods. I then took out some slack from the sterring box. I need to drive it but cannot at least until Monday when I get the gas tank filter.

Some driveway pics..I think I will go one more click on the outer spline but will only do so after I get the tires I want to run. I also could not resist and put the high speed polish on the paint work.

I just got back from BAP with new KYB shocks. Rotors and pads and install the dampener and the front end is done....

looks great!

I got the birth certificate today....2 day build

Gas tank looks pretty good on 7-3-08

Except the rust the radiator shop just painted over.... They told me they would hot tank then paint. The last tank I had done (not at this place) came out like new. I stripped the tank with chemical stripper, sandpaper, and wire wheel.

Then took what was left to the blaster ($20).....I LOVE the look of bare metal freshly blasted. 8)

Gas tank painted, spare tire well painted

Thursday night I was helping my neighbor with his truck. We pushed the squareback into his driveway and his old lady proceeded to back into the drivers fender and door with her new bug. The next day I worked the dent and it looks good. I did not get pissed off, shit happens he is going to give me some cash..I can fix it....but it still sucks....

wolfman's brother Mon Jul 14, 2008 7:00 pm

sucks your car got backed into.same thing kind of happened to my 1st notch.neighbor lady came home parked the car and left in neutral w/o the hand brake.her car rolled out of her driveway(downhill)and across the street into mine and SMASHED the right rear quarter panel

THANK YOU!!! :D

My reply on this (reply) may have been soo late (really late), but, honestly, me too, I only come to know that Type 3's with pigalle interiors are so special that, in my case, I am still looking for my luck in looking for one here in the Philippines.

By the way I see you are in West NC, 10 years ago my parents built their retirement house in Murphy, and they spend more of their time there than Florida anymore. I always loved visiting and when I moved in January it was either out west or that area of NC. I love it there!!

Based on the posts I see of all the Type3's you spot in the Phillipines I bet you find one!! :)

After installing the gas tank, I focused on getting it running right. I adjusted the valves, replaced the fuel lines, new in the tank and external fuel filters, and new valve cover gaskets. So I researched the dual carb sync and Weber 34 ICT's adjustments and jetting here on the Samba and the net.

The pass side carb would respond but not the driver side to either a/f or idle adjustments, so I knew something was wrong. Sunday morning I started poking around and felt fuel all over the backside of the driver sides carb. Enough running like crap....both carbs coming off and rebuild them.

I would add that the rebuild is quite easy and simple on these carbs.

I've heard Redline mentioned as a source for weber parts etc. I'm not sure your webers should have the same jets on both sides as the stock Solex carbs were jetted differently side to side.

type3forme Wed Jul 23, 2008 9:32 pm

Hello. I recently bought ICT jets at Aircooled.net. They may have other stuff you need. Good luck.

Thanks, looks like they should have most of what I need.

Funny you replied....I was born and raised in Largo, 37 years.

Have not had much to update-working way too much.....

I got all the parts I needed to finish the carbs and put new plugs in, runs good, needs some fine tuning. It stutters a bit at partial throttle positions (and constant speed throttle positions) but idles like a top. From reading here the 009 distributor may be the problem. That being said I am going to see if I can commute a couple days to work--so I went to the AZ MVD and got my "historic plates".

I also need to put the caps and rings back on the wheels, looks so much better.

I have read the stories of bad MVD experiences, I had no problems even with a title signed by a seller in June and my signature not notarized or even filled out until I got to the MVD today. The MVD also pulled a NADA book for the value of the vehicle. She did not ask what I paid, and stated that if I insure it for more than the $2295 NADA book value I would pay more to title tag etc. $2295....
