Is this correct.

Yes, that's a rear qtr panel ashtray for 1953-60 Beetle sedans

Was there one on each side?

henry roberts Wed Jun 11, 2008 3:01 am

over here it was just one on the rhs. might be different in the us.

RareAir Wed Jun 11, 2008 7:09 am

Nope, only 1 rear qtr mounted ashray in the US as well.

How do I tell the difference between what some people have for sale on the Samba as a Convertible ash tray and the correct 56 ash tray the fronts look alike. Does anyone have one for sale? Found a pair of headlights.

lawn.ninja Thu Jun 12, 2008 5:59 pm

As far as I know the difference will be in the amount of ribs on the face and the fact that the back of the vert one is flat and not rounded off. This is because the back windows roll down.

RareAir Thu Jun 12, 2008 9:30 pm

The vert ashtray, besides being thinner, is also larger. The embossing on the front are actually "ribs"

The sedan ashtray more resembles "grooves", and not truly "ribs"

Any oval folks have a ash tray hidden away that they will sell?

When did the handles change from metal to plastic? Bob Wilson's book has an Oct 52 with a metal handle, and I've got one from a 54 model with a plastic handle.

If you get stuck finding one, I've got an average one somewhere. Post from 'Strayliya' will be more than it's worth though!

The great search for correctness has no limit on cost.. (unless my wife finds out) More than once I paid way to much. Or a part that cost few cents to make in its day and now cost hundreds.

Yes I would be interested if you can find it.

I've got one, the chrome is a bit pitted and rusted and it's a little stuck. You can open it but it's stiff and squeeky. Has some 37 year old cigarettes and a napkin in there too.
