View original topic: Model number of 'good' 356 rods
gimmesomeshelter Wed Jun 11, 2008 8:22 pm

Hello-

I'm building an Okrasa engine for my VW and I want to install Porsche crank/rods in it. My understanding is that the early rods are much weaker than the later ones. Can anyone provide me with the model numbers of the more desireable rods?

Thanks,

Paul

I don't know the #'s but there going to be super 90 / 912's

Just a question ,, don't get me wrong ... just by happen chance in the early 70's I did own and build and Okrasa motor ...This was in 71,, it took me at least two years to gather all the parts...crank,, heads and carbs were the easy stuff to find LOL..

If you use the porsche parts are you really going to say you have an Okrasa motor ???

Paul, are you using a VW36 HP 2-pc Crankcase? The best rod that Porsche had was part number 616 103101 01 for the 356BC 912. However there were several early versions with numbers 502.03.105 in two versions. Then other versions of 616.103.101.00. Check the
Samba Clasified for 356 parts.

Frank-

Thanks for the information!

Towd-

Yes, my motor won't be a pure Okrasa.

I have to admit that the whole authenticity issue drives me a little crazy. On the one hand, it would be great to have a car that looks like it just came out of a time capsule. On the other, there are things like safety (bias ply vs. radial), technical progress (billet crankshaft vs. fragile forged), not to mention the practical considerations of navigating through current traffic. My goal is to have a car that looks very stock, but has little upgrades here and there that make it safer, more reliable, and more fun.

Yes Paul there is nothing like having a stock looking Bug that can run the streets with monst anything. The best one I had was a 1956 VW sedan with Judson blower on. From stoplight to stoplight it would beat most of the street cars of its day. But it finally broke the crankshaft, however it still ran. Now I have a 2pc VW case with a Porsche late B crank, 80 mm p&c's alloy cylinders and 1500 super heads line bored using VW main porsche rods. Just trying to find enough time to put it together. Right now concerned with a 356b project. Good luck Frank.

yes I'am sure the parts now are all but impossible to find.. I have seen some listed in here..

The motor I ended up building was just to do it.. It turned up the Dealer I worked for had crank and rods ( used) laying in a pile in a back room ,, That pile of greasy junk,, That no one digs through. The owner told me it was there and That I could have,, after he explain what Okrasa was all about ...

I was 22 years old.....

This gave me a complete bottom end,, but no heads or carbs ..

About two years later,, A Hot Rod Vw shop opened up ( Donsco )

people would bring in used Hi performance parts to sell .. One day I walk in and there in a dirty greasy dark corner sets the whole nine yards to finish that motor $125 .. my total cost of this was >>>>>> 125 $ LOL

the engine was never used by me.....This was in about 71,, dual ports heads were were the big deal webers where being stocked,, I used it in trade

Paul,

Sounds like your making progress. I look forward to the day I can start putting mine together, instead of just collecting parts.
