Thanks for the help. Those pictures are from the gallery on here, neither are mine.

Looking at the two types of pedal rubber above left me wondering whether the underlying pedal castings were different shapes. Perhaps this is just down to the different camera angles?

If the pedals indeed do have different shaped pedal castings, hopefully this picture taken of my actual pedal cluster will help decide once and for all?

Bob Wilson's book led me to believe, and I still do, that the small logo rubbers are correct. Some of the wording uses the term 'early' for the large logo rubbers and I can only assume that 'early' is in the context of 1949-1959 Beetles (taken from the book's title).

These are correct for your '54 Beetle

That was an Oct '52 change.

To be clear, are you saying they changed from the large logo to the small logo in Oct. '52?

From a May '53 manual

The right hand picture shows a '53-only oval dash (ashtray with handle but no chrome trim) but did VW use zwitter-era images in their earliest post-March '53 manuals touched-up to show the latest oval features?
The pics show the earlier style pedal cover?

Sorry for not keeping up with this thread. Andrew oval, yes I was saying large to small logo in Oct '52. I will have to look through my reference books and find where I read that, as it is apparently not correct. Either that, or home-market deluxes kept large logo pads for longer than US-bound cars (unlikely).

My '53 uses the larger logo design.

I've just dug out all the junk from around my 'Sept 53 and taken a few snaps of the pedals.
My car has the larger logo covers (well only 1 as the clutch one is missing), have no doubt it is the original as it is so worn.................

Thanks for the input everyone.

I'm with you, Nessy. Those must surely be the original [style] rubbers.

Been poring again over Jim Richardson's VW Beetle Specification Guide just in case I missed something, but I guess pedal rubbers don't rank highly enough for inclusion.

I'm leaning more towards the larger logo rubbers being correct now. It would still be great to nail down the year they changed these.

Mmm......to be honest I'm more inclined to say a '54 should have the smaller logo covers based on the info already posted.......
I know there is a bit of a risk in taking images from the glovebox manuals as 'gospel' but the manuals from May '53 and Jan '54 do show a change from large to small logo pedal rubbers.
On that basis (and with the assumption that the cover on my car is original) I'd say they changed to small logo between Sept '53 and Jan '54.................... :?:

I looked through a few books last night and it looks like I got the Oct. '52 idea from the Wilson book, pg. 92, "From October 1952, the VW logo....was noticably smaller than before. In addition, the external pattern was different that before...."

There are a decent number of mistakes in that book. It might serve better fueling my next bonfire.
