hi,
think about buying a early 49 split. could you please help how to verify that the chassis fits the body. it has some not original parts in it.and the id-plate is coloured black and silver and not only mettall. how can i see if the doors match the building year? it has the rare engine lid, and the banana bumpers. also the radio dash is oppen and not how it is supposed to be closed with the vw logo.the gas tank is correct.is their another number besides the id-plate where i can verify the correct year. it is supposed to be from march of 49. it has the deluxe trim at the doors and on the body which are not supposed to be theyre. how many holes for the clips have the later ones?thanks a lot for any help. regards ben |

Hi,
You can check the bodynumber and the the chassinumber here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php
I think it was common to add deluxe trim and cut out the vw stamping on the cars back then. The ID plate should be metall only and not black and silver. I belive that you should be able to see the bodynumber stamped into the body near the id plate.
Good luck 8) |

The ID tag should look like the one on my 1949 Split built on March 31st:
The right dash section should have to embossed VW logo stamped in it. I believe this section was opened in July 1949 with the introduction of the Deluxe models. |

| that is exactly how the id tag looks like.how is the interior in your spit? i think it is supposed to be brown cord for the 49, and in the one i am willing to buy looks like the normal brown style from the normal splits..thanks a lot for all of your replys.. can you maybe send me a picture of your rearview mirror, becaus the owner has to different kinds of ( i think they are called footbal) to chose from. does your 49er have the stick shifter with the kdf logo in it ? thanks a lot.. ben |

I always hated this particular vin plate ^^ cos its almost impossible to replicate unless you know a very good stencil shop.
The dash had the opening in June, the same month VW dropped the "L" Handle on the front hood along with many other changes that can drive you nuts if your looking for a correct car. |

| Closed dash, L-handle in front, metal glove boxes, all that was changed in the first days of may 1949. |

VWs are not the only maker to use such plates. They are easy to damage, as you can see. There ARE suppliers of such items as reproductions. The REAL trick is to get the stamping and engraving right. Some plates used two or more fonts and font sizes. Some parts engraved and other parts stamped. A poorly done one is as easy to spot as one that is done too good. |
