1956 Beetle with stock 36 hp engine but with a Bosch Distributor VJ4 BR8 non vac advance.
Rebuilt the fuel pump, put in new fuel lines engine idles perfectly.
Timing is 7.5 BTDC. Distributor is avancing correctly.
It lacks power unless I pull the choke out up to 1/2 way and then runs strong. I adjusted the lean/rich. The accelerator pump is working.
I am lost as I have never had this problem . I tried seaching without an answer.
I checked for a vacuum leak on the intake manifolds, but there are fine.
The jets appear clean.
Any correct answers will be most appreciated. |

Hi,
A little history if you would. Has it ever run properly? Are you a "new" owner just getting it on the road? Did it develop over time or just one morning it was there?
You are starving for a combustible fuel / air mix or you are using what you have poorly.
Some thoughts
The older carbs can have the venturi installed upside down which greatly alters the air flow patterns into the combustion chamber and the atomization of the fuel. (the long taper should be pointing down into the throat)
The ignition timing is off, either simply set wrong or the points are badly worn which in turn affect timing.
Fuel pump pressure and/or float valve adjustment is wrong, not enough fuel is getting into the carb allowing it to starve for fuel.
You are getting adequate fuel to idle well but higher RPMs require more fuel which it isn't getting.
High speed jets are clogged or the passage ways for the fuel in the carb are.
A place to start, I'm sure more ideas will come along.
OR.... the car is dying in the heat and humidity just like we humans are here in our fine state of NJ!

| I concur with sconord. Though I'm betting clogged jets, due to leaving fuel setting in the bowl (especially if you left gas / ethanol blend in it!) |
