the 70 lives -it lives-it lives!!

here are the pics sitting, waitin, hopin', dreamin' of the day it rides again.

ok first - thanks to cwrisley and motorbreath for the final push, the opportunity and for keeping it in the family.

The pics are post power wash, and a quick clean, also the inside back has been rust treated replaced and primed, a bit hard to see in the pics it was hot and sunny that day.

Anyhow the adventure begins with ordering of the pillar replacement piece I believe cwrisley (Green Machine Build) has a picture on his site still since he was the PO. Sorry haven't figured out how to put a link in yet.

Also, thinking I needed a starter, I decided to trouble shoot first. Turns out Several wires were not connected, grounding strap, etc. Ya think !! Starter turned over the engine - things looked promising - and then ---------SMOKE !!!!! The distributor got fried, turns out after some quick deducing - I noticed that the negative from the dizzy was sharing posts on the coils same positive side - in other words full juice. Ouchjavascript:emoticon(':x')

Well, needless to say great opportunity to replace with a new one anyway - 009 dizzy, now i just have to set the timing. Money saved on a starter goes to a 009. life goes on.

as they say the adventure begins - sorry bout such a long post after this things should be shorter once everyone is on the same page.

Any how much more to come.

thanks again C & D. See ya out there. (by the way thanks for the pic on the page Wrisley - embarrassing)

Welcome to the sickness, brother!

Im glad it could go to a good home....blah,blah,blah!!

As far as your wiring goes, lose it. Id rip every wire outta there and start fresh. Then at least you know what you have.

Youre already off to a good start though, what with a bitchin car thats "almost turnkey".

What happened today with the tank? Waited and waited........

also, found out the engine is an H5 series - 1500 right? Its probably a 1600 by now - wont be able to tell until I get the #'s off the cylinders - 85 is a 1600 ? Or 82 cant remember, read so much its all getting garbled in the head..

by the way, word has it there is a knock in cylinder #2, anyone have any ideas? They would be greatly appreciated. Also, for future reference, looking for a baja one piece front end. Not liking the racing style so much. Who knows maybe it will look better once I get some eyes mounted up front.

sup hucks - yeah, motorbreath's bug is sick. been readin your post on his site for sometime now. Im glad to be part of the fam. Anyway, plans ....... dreamin big, budget small, at least until med school is over. for now get the damn thing runnin'. probably do a rebuild or an engine upgrade, would love 1915 or so eventually. Havent had a bug since high school 85 (ouch-just dated myself) anyway, up and going by the next season is the goal. Then we'll see what breaks and go from there. As I said I have lots of ideas, 18 or 20 gal fuel cell probably. perty it up a bit. I can paint, airbrush, upholster, and wire. I'm a fanatic 4 body work. I'm one of those weirdo's that love that s&**. Rusty on the 'ol welding skills but thats what we have motorbreath for right ? LOL. Eventually a better cage. It has a store bougt six pointer in it, with some extra tubing for a kid seat. Which I don't need. Decided not to ever have them because they would break all my toys. LOL. Still some cutting to do one the body to clean it up a bit. New rubbers, new meats, etc. It needs some TLC, but that's what we do right? Anyhow, I think the hardest project is gonna be how to install and get the flux capacitor working just right. Nothin' like a baja 2 make ya feel young and strapping again eh!

SICK! Paulie made it! I can help with the wiring so... that new harness and a differnt $10 dollar fuse block and your stylin... no problems.... And personally, I would be thinking of that motor as a core... ( I even have some dual port heads that i'll donate to you....

keep the pics coming...

I know what ya mean about the bajas makin ya feel young. My wife said I am like a teen age kid with mine. Gonna put "My Midlife Crisis" on my windshield when I get my next vinal order done.

Hey! Thats a cool hood

 Welcome. And you are already way further that most by getting a car that is already started

Spunpuppy Tue Jun 17, 2008 11:05 am

as words made famous by Val Kilmer in Tombstone - "I did not mean to offened...." just not my style. looks good on yours though. raising it up may help me. A wondrous suggestion from Motorbreath.

motorbreath53 Tue Jun 17, 2008 1:46 pm

".... I dunno Ike, maybe poker's just not your game.... I know, LETS HAVE A SPELLING CONSTEST!"

OR

"Kate, your not wearing a bussel.... how lude......."

You've got better things to worry about for the time being...

such as, seats mounted, wiring, motor etc... You can doll up the fiberglass after you have got the car dirty for the first time.

cwrisley Fri Jun 20, 2008 12:11 pm

Well......I wanna see progress. Lets ditch that wiring and prep for new harness. You had some trimming to do front and rear on the body, kinda hack job as it sits now. Just thought you'd need a swat on the ass to move you along!!

How 'bout some more pics now that she all cleaned up.

Spunpuppy Fri Jun 20, 2008 3:50 pm

Oh daddy !!! Smack that @$$. I'll get pics up as soon as my camera starts behaving. As far as cutting, not done yet. Compressor took a dive. Had to pull the pancake out of storage. It just cant keep up with the air tools though. Any way, did what I could without power, finished stripping and sanding the inside. Removed about 10 lbs of tar from the floor pans and rear seat area. Treated the little bits of rust with Naval Jelly and pounded out the dents the PO/PO put in the pan. Primed and seal coated everything. Realized it was well over 100 degrees when I stood up too fast, almost passed out and called it quits for the day. Unfortunately I am not afforded the luxury of a cool garage to shield from the elements at this time. Spent the rest of the time ordering stuff online. Window seals, clutch and throttle cables (wiring Harness), tires, shocks, lights. Still waiting on my pillar piece to come in as well. Its taking forever, probably gonna call here soon. Any way, that's it so far. Wiring is comin out next as soon as its cool enough for me to get out there - may just do it tonight. That way I can cut and prep the front end, paint it up some before the wires get here.

birddog1148 Fri Jun 20, 2008 6:48 pm

get ya a used furnace blower, makes a great fan for the garage!

90xjlimited4x4 Fri Jun 20, 2008 6:51 pm

around here we mount a water cooler on wheels works great on dry days but on humid days you want to be 1000 miles away from it!

Spunpuppy Fri Jun 20, 2008 10:00 pm

thanks 4 the tips guys - a furnace blower would just blow hot air at me and I suppose the cooler would work if i put it in the bug with me. ha, ha that's funny - but it could work - like I said NO Garage - working outside. Maybe I could just fire up the bug and turn on the A/C. Oh yeah, I forgot...... duh!

Nice Fried dizzy !! That was fun. New 009 in now. New Trim needs pics below as promised. I'll post inside views soon as something interesting happens.

Lookin Better

Anybody have any ideas on how to (safely / eaisly) lift those adjustables. Used a jack a couple of 2x4's and a pipe. I can get about another four ticks out of it but man its sketchy.[/img]
