Hi,

We just acquired a 1967 bug, and are going to restore it and give it to our dad who mentioned how much he liked it.

One thing we noticed is the front seats are not the original ones. I'm not really sure what they are from, but they aren't the right ones.

So from what I reading the 66-67 seats will fit the car without any modifying. But the 67 seats didn't have a headrest.

So I was just wondering, since the 66-67 I'm guessing are going to be hard to find anyways. What other years do people recommend/suggest putting in the car?

Here are some pics of the car as it is now.

Later model highbacks and shoulder belts were added. I would keep them if the car is to be driven much at all.

So the shoulder belts in the pics are from a later year car?
Same with the seats, they are just from a later year car?

nice mid 67.

Yes, the seats and seat belts are not '67. However, as KTPhil mentioned, for the sake of better safety, you may consider keeping them. Originally, the '67 would have low back front seats and lap belts only. There was a shoulder belt that could be purchased, but anything that old would be suspect as far as crashworthiness (heaven forbid it was necessary).

THat's a jacked up speaker setup, but thankfully the dash is uncut. Looks like a great resto candidate  . Have fun :D ! Keep us posted with pics of the progress!!

...so if you have ANY questions about a '67 please don't hesitate to ask Bill May 8)

Thanks for the replies!

Yes I want to keep the seat belts, and I would prefer the higherback seats too. Hopefully my dad feels the same way.
Yes I was looking at the pics again and noticed that speaker. Isnt' that where the glovebox is suppose to go?

I'll have to go look at the car again, and see if the speaker is just sitting there, or if someone actually tried to mount a speaker there.

I'm into car audio, and saw that speaker there and did the.... That doesn't make any sense (lol)

Thanks!
The car has been sitting over in Eastern Washington out in a field for at least a 5 years I'm guessing.

Overall from what we can see, the car looks to be in pretty good shape. The body looks pretty good, and doesn't look like it's ever been hit at all. Not much rust that I can see anywhere either.

So hopefully once we start taking body parts off, we don't find anything bad :)

Yes, where the speaker is should be the glove compartment door. Here's a pic of a stock setup. Well, almost stock.... the factory installed a push button on the glove compartment. Mine has an optional locking handle. Annyhoo, you get the idea

Wow, yours looks great!
Hopefully ours turns out that nice too!

Where are the speakers in these cars?
We have a 71 too, and I think I remember seeing a speaker in the dash next to the speedometer, but I might be mistaken.

Why take it apart?
It looks as if the paint should buff out quite nicely.
Remember---it's only original once.

well, the rearview mirror is completely wrong and the other stuff that would clue me in to early or late is missing. What am I not seeing, Master?

cdoyle Wed Jun 18, 2008 6:58 pm

When you say the mirror is completly wrong, do you mean it's not one from an early 67, but correct for a mid 67?

Or is it just wrong for the car all together :)

The rear rim (original one hopefully) doesn't have the "safety groove" in it. That showed up in the later part of '67.

Look at the base of the mirror where it contacts the top of the windshield. It has a hole in it for the visors

This is not proper for '67. See here

Good luck with your new car. Outside of rust issues you may have the rest is just a matter of either upgrading or replacing parts with all the one year 67 stuff. It's up to you to decide which way to go and if so, make a priority list as to items to work on.

I have been working on my 67 for a couple of years now restoring it as much as possible with one year parts and such, and the pictures below show some of the one year items such as rear bumper and late 67 seats. I opted for the safer 3 point retractable seat belts instead of the original lap belts which were optional for that year.

Good luck with your project and keep in mind there are threads and discussions here about all the 67 one year stuff if you decide to go that route:
