:? Hello all, just picked up a 61 356 normal engine,it has been sitting many moons.I have stripped it down to the rods only, have not split the case. But when I turn the crank on the gland nut side,it will turn 360,then if I push the gland nut towards the front pully side it locks up and only turns oh maybe 180,any ideas why? :? Thanx

Is the distributor still in?

If not the distributor drive might be the problem.

Well, the front of the case has been removed, the rods are still on ,I turn it with the flywheel end pulled away from the case ,turns 360,hen push the crank towards the case and it will onl turn 180 or so.I know I need to split the case, will do this in the next week or so,will let all know what is the hang up,thanx. :?

But is the distributor DRIVE STILL IN? If it is, it could be moving up and then locking up. What Glenn means is that if the distributor is in place it will hold the drive down.
One always needs to be careful with all VW (and Porsche) boxers, when turning it over without the distributor in place. The gears will bind up and sometimes damage the brass drive gear on the crank.
