If I recall, the first split verts had Karmann Karosserie on the badge. From 1950 to 1951 they had Karmann Kabriolet with one T. I'm not sure when in 51, or if it was in 52 that they went to two T's.

I may need to go back and check the books I was referring to. My cabrio is an October 51, so it may be that I found something to make me think the change to 2 Ts had occurrred prior to my car being built. I do remember there was very little information available. As is often the case with these kinds of details. Keeps it fun. For the forseeable future, I guess I will leave the spelling of my screen name as is. 8)

2 "t" badges are already in stock , 1 "t" badges are going to be ready in 15 days , moldings are already on the way

the badges will look smooth on the back side , but this is unnoticeable when installed on the car , i bet no owner will allow bystanders to unscrew the badge to see if it`s smooth or not

Rich, IŽll check my records and if available IŽll send you the details of the fellow from whom I got the repro. Besides restoring enamel badges is not the end of the world.

If anyone has a correct ORIGINAL spare badge they want to sell for a '50 vert ;please let me know. I think mine's original on my car but I'm not certain. If so I could also use a spare. Must be cherry. $$$. PM me or email at sniendorf@hotmail.com

Fellow Split Vert owners....
Lets just say not all Split Vert 'Kabriolet' badges were created equal.
George Lloyd from England kindly lent me his original badge off his '50 Vert a few years back so I could use it to do a run of them for those at the time that needed them,I only did ten copies and they got snapped up quickly.
George's badge was solid on the back unlike the embossed/stamped ones that HeSa has posted a pic of,so I am presuming maybe the earlier badges were solid and later on stamped/embossed.
We restored George's badge back to original, rechromed and then re vitreous enamled just like the way it was done back in '50 for his kind gesture of taking the risk of sending it to the other side of the world.
Definetly only one T prior to '52 from all the research I did at the time.

Tony - how about making another run?

The picture of the enameled badges show that the lettering (cloisonne/filigree) work to be a bit distorted, look close at the "O" in kabriolet, plus several of the other letters in the badge are off. Note also the door in the Hamburg hood crest badge seems to have a tilted center line, and the G in Hamburg is right up against the border of the badge and the H isn't.

A good badgemaker can produce these in exact as original quality, in vitreous enamel, and I suspect the ones pictured above likely use a resin epoxy to further cut down on costs. I remember Tony producing a short run of them a few years back and the quality was excellent, I would suspect the same quality from Ricardo as well, nice to see them become available.

Please do not mislead people even you and your collaborators are sharing the same market. There is nothing wrong with the German repro and it is manufactured in the same way as the original. It is also pretty expensive so it is good to have the cheap Argentinian repros for those split vert owners who have decided to cut costs on behalf of quality in their restoration

Here are the comparison pics again.

Is it just me or are the A and R in KARMANN not even close? Look at the opening in the center of the letters.

George Lloyd Sat Jun 28, 2008 10:58 am

There are two different types of single T badge.
The embossed type as above^^^^^^.
Also a solid back version,as was on my car and original.
A guy in NZ did a limited run of "solid backs" using my original as a pattern.
There was also "Karmann Karroserie",but i think this was only fitted in '49.

It is the reflection in picture. All of the letters are 1=1

That picture looks alot better now, and the picture above seemed to change also? I refreshed the image a few times before posting and the letters were off, but I see you didn't edit the pics so not sure what happened there. The only really noticeable difference from one of the pics now is that the black background on the new badge is not quite as thick as the original is, the originals are all rather evenly flat, the black in repro seems to be from the picture rather shallow, more relief embossed. Nonetheless not a bad repro at all all thanks for the added pics.

True that there is less enamel in the repro.

Ricardo, nothing personal and no economical interest in this matter. If sharing information is against your business strategy you should probably reconsider what you are doing.
