I may still go ahead and bore the case. It depends on what bearings I have in stock. I still need to go through my stock of bearings, and see what I have. I know I am getting short on STD/STD main bearings. I know I have quite a few sets that are STD crank and first oversize case with first oversize thrust.
Ah, I got it! Now I know why folks have you rebuild engines.
Are standard size bearings getting hard to find? |

I just disassembled the crankshaft, and got everything miked. Looks like I am good to go for standard bearings.
I think I got this engine just in time. Look at the bearings that came out of it.
I found all the excess endplay that the crankshaft had. It is almost all in wear in the bearings.
But the crank is right on spec.
Just like a new one. Sorry about the blurry photo, I didn't want to set up a tripod for one closeup photo.

No, Std/Std main bearings are not hard to find. It is just that with most engine rebuilds, if the case is align bored, or the crank is reground, then you can't use them. New crank, and new case and you need them.
I have a box full of bearings, that came in the inventory that I bought. I hate to buy bearings if I can use some that I have.

That's putting it mildly. You should really see his shop.
He's got parts in boxes, crates, and in piles. Some of it in the main shop, and some where his wife parks in the winter (the garage). His shop is huge (at least a 6 car shop) on the main floor, with space to go up a level. It just needs a month or 2 of organizing from all of his parts purchases. :o It's full of the stuff dreams are made of. |

No, Bob has free reign. After a week of his and Sue's labor, on the Ghia.
Oh, BTW, I just came back from buying the last of the inventory that was at the guys house. His widow wants all the garage back. New heads, carpet sets, etc. This includes a 2.2 or 2.4L Wasserboxer engine that has only been run on the test stand. Has a cam,( she doesn't know what it is) with dual Webber 44's, still mounted on the test stand.
Probably 2 healthy pickup loads plus the engine. |

You get weighed? Bloody hell, he made me strip to my skivvies before entering the shop, and then I had to sign a form swearing me to secrecy. |

I dont have any blue carpet, but there may be some in this stuff I bought today. All she knew is that there was carpet kits in the rafters of the garage.
I might be pleasantly surprised. The rafters of his other garage is where I found all of the T-3 parcel trays. |

Thank you for the reply! :D The new purchase is what I was referring to. I thought you knew what you had, but now that you do not, happy hunting! How many parcel trays were there? Or, are you going to post a new topic? It sounds like quite a find worthy of other Type 3 folks to drool over. Not in the vicinity of the parts, of course!  |

The building was sold and the last day of business was around the 13th.

Well, more progress today. Got the bottom end of the engine together.
I got the piston/cylinders the other day, but had to finish putting a customers engine back together. And doing several sets of heads for other people. Now I am back to my own stuff.
I can't get the other stash of parts until next weekend. I She is not available to let me in the garage until then.

More progress today. Just need to put the intakes system back on and the muffler.
It should be back in the car late tomorrow.
I hate painting tin.

Should be back in the car tonight or tomorrow. Engine is back together except for the flywheel and clutch. I have to do those with it sitting on the ground.
Flywheel and clutch are on.
My wife just left, so I have no one to help me push the car back onto the concrete. She went to my daughters house, so no telling when she will be back. |

Engine is back in and running. But if you don't read the FI sticky at the top, I have some the same problems that Bobnotch had with his.
Engine idles rough, and seems to be running rich.
When I disconnect the intake sensor, it smooths right out. I tried a couple differnet tested MPS's and same results.
I have reinstalled the 220 ohm resistor that I had previously removed while pulling the engine, and it seems to help. I will make that permanent tomorrow, and then take it for a drive.
I have about 1 hour running on the stands, but 0 miles.
You can see the days progress starting here. There are a couple videos, but they need Quicktime to view.

I have been watching and learning. Congratulations on the progress! B.T.W., videos do not work: unknown plug-in.
Oh, nice tachometer, and it appears it also does dwell. Boy, I bet it is nice having fancy tools!
Forty years of working on cars and you accumulate a few tools.
You can watch that video in Quiktime.
It is a new camera, and I am not used to it.
This is what I get after reinstalling Quicktime:

Now, I guess, Windows users know how Linux users feel when things don't work right on the internet. |
