putting in an 1835, balanced, 110 cam, 8.5:1 compression. bought some DRLA 40's off ebay. what jet sizes should i get to get me started. and should i get an assortment to tune it? thanks.

What size heads? What size venturi's?

Stock 40's cam with 34 vents, 140 mains, 60 idles, 180 air, 35 accl pump-that is a good starting point.

Run the set up 74 thing shows and don't look back.

Make sure your linkage is in perfect shape. They must be synched at idle and lift off at the same time. If they don't open evenly and end up at WOT at the same time they will feel like jetting issues. Especialy when just cruising at one speed.

Don't just rely on turning screws and bolts to adjust. Sometimes you have to slightly bend a linkage tab.

Linkage is by far the fault over jetting in most cases.

stock dual port heads, 34 vent's. they have 60,162,200and 35's jets already.

Take the 162 mains and throw them away. Start with a 140. Mine's at 135.

Yep, I would get a set of 140 and a set of 135 mains and a set of 60 and 55 idles-you will probably be able to go to the leaner jets the further you get tuned.

What is your elevation?

At your elevation, I bet these will work out:

Maybe consider some 57 idle jets.

With that cam I'd say 34 vents are pretty darn big for an 1835. If you've got the heads to match it'll have good top end but you'll lose torque and thats what makes a car driveable. I'd be looking at 28/30 vents, 55 idles and 118 - 130 mains. Thats what I've got on my bay and its a joy to drive. Happily pulls from 30 in fourth.

well i got about 300 miles on engine now. carbs are "out of the box" meaning 34 vents, 180 main/air, 140 main/gas, 60 idle, and 35 pump.
car drives pretty good, pulls away from a low rpm, doesnt smoke, stumble, hesitate. overall runs pretty good. just a little low pop pop when downshifting to a stop. plug has a light black over the center electrode and darker around the edge.
should i leave it or keep messing with it? i want it to run as good as it can.

Try the 135 main.

Roughly how far out are your mixture screws?

B Ramsey Mon Aug 18, 2008 5:10 am

about 2 turns.

mharney Mon Aug 18, 2008 7:06 am

Kinda what I figured. Your idle jets are too big.

If you will go down on the idle jets, which will result in slightly more mixture screw, your decel mixture will go up a little, and cause you to get less backfires much of the time. A little backfire may be attributed to exhaust leaks or monster exhausts with large exits.

Ok, ill try some 55 idle jets and get some 135 mains and try them. Thanks! Ill let you know how it does.
