Hi,

I have a guy that has a boat load of engine parts. He bought a hole lot at an auction to scrap out. He knows nothig about VWs, he just bought it because of the way scrap prices are. Most of it is junk, but he was told there is some 36 HP stuff in there. How do I tell what is 36 HP stuff. He has heads, pistons and cylinders, cranks, and carbs.

Any help would be appreciated. I would like to get the good stuff before it goes to scrap.

Thanks

Size of the components will be one of the keys to identification, they are smaller when compared to 1500-1600 components.

36hp carbs use a Solex 28PCI carburetor

heads are single port. They also have the part # cast into the rocker area

crank will have a "64" stamped into it

Did the 40 HP motors use a 28pict carb as well? Are the ports on a 36 HP head the same size as the ports on a 40 horse? I guess I'm looking for how to tell the difference between 40 HP stuff and 36 HP stuff.

Thanks

anything for 25/36 hp is small as said above.

The heads for a 40 hp would look most similar to a single port 1300-1600 heads. I'm talking the width from port to port.

The rocker stud bosses on the 36hp cylinder heads are rectangular, the 40hp are square or round. 36hp valves are perpendicular to the face, 40hp are at a slight angle.
The 36hp cylinders have got holes in the top fins for the head bolts, the 40hp have cutouts.
The 28PCI carb is different to the 28PICT, the 28PCI has a manual choke the PICT will have a wound coily thingy controlling the choke.
The 36hp cases have the integral generator mount, the 40hp generator mount is bolted.
36hp cranks are shorter than the 40hp, I've never seen a 40hp crank out of the car so I don't know how to identify them. Go with Rareair's method.

I probably have got a few of these wrong, but some people seem better at correcting mistakes rather than providing information in the first place...

Sad but true.

If it were me, I would grab everything you can fit in your vehicle. 40hp stuff still has some value too.

Things like cranks, cams, and rods might only be good as cores...grab any small carbs and cast iron distributors you find. 8)

I managed to get about 10 28 PCI carbs, 3 sets of 36 HP heads, a bunch of 40 HP heads, 3 complete engines (36 HP, 1500 SP and a 40 HP), and two split case trannys.

Can anyone tell me how to tell what year the transmissions are from?

Thanks

You can get a general idea here from the rear axle numbers
