View original topic: "Free Air" Rating on Compressor

I am looking at the Shulz air compressor:

7.580VL30X

Stats given:

7580VL30X-1 7,5 Single 230 22.7 80 vert MSL30MAX 565

22.7 is Free Air rating CFM...is that any good???

Single phase power and two stage motor. 175psi.

I am only concerned about the amount of air? Is this considered good or not? The "Free Air" rating is throwing me.

Thanks,

SAM

Free air is the volume of air at ambient conditions, before your compressor pumps up the pressure. I don't know about the US, but in Australia people usually talk about 'Normal' conditions of 0 deg C and 101.325 kPa (32 deg F and 28 in Hg or something like that). Some places use 'Standard' conditions which is 15 deg C and 101.325 kPa.

Your compressor can suck in 22.7 CFM , which it pumps up to 175 psi and in the process drops the volume to 14.7/(14.7+175)*100%=7.7% of the original volume (you have to work in absolute pressure & assuming perfect adiabatic conditions etc etc)). Because one compressor can deliver many combinations of pressures and flow rates of compressed air - it is easier to classify them as to how much air they suck in, which is the free air.

As for the question of is it good enough, then it depends what you are trying to do with it. Painting - yes, blasting - should be fine but you may occasionally need to be a bit gentle with the trigger finger when you are doing big pieces but once you get to know how it behaves, it should be fine.

Have you looked at the Ingersoll Rand T30's? They are a local company too, just inside the perimeter. Our T30 7.5hp is rated at 24.3 cfm at 175psi. It takes brakes while we are media blasting. It will run just about anything.
