I have been kicking around the idea of using a Type III configuration as opposed to the typical Type I. I have built both in the past, so I know the engine is the same, just the cooling tins and fans are different.

What are the pros & cons of using the Type III rather than the Type I.

The original Manx was designed around an upright vw engine (type 1), however, a type 3 cooling configuration will also work. The only difference is that the T3 cooling fan and tin will hand out past the back of the buggy, depending on the body (could be con if you don't like the look). Some buggys, such as truck styles with a bed, were designed with the T3 style cooling in mind. They generally have a longer rear end with the engine beneath the bed and accessible with a cover.

It is really up to the builder's preference and what is available in his garage.

T3 engines work great in Buggies but are limited in the exhaust dept. as you can generally only fit dual cannons.

I've got type 3 in my manx kinda like the way it looks
pro : if you shred the belt you don't lose cooling fan seems like I've got more room to work on it especially carbs
con : not many exahust options

Back when we were building buggies in the late 60's, early 70's the largest upright engines were 1500 SP's, but most were 36 or 40 horse engines.

If you had a type 3 1600 DP you really had something ! Because of that I still like the look of the type 3 in a buggy.

The plan is to do a turbo setup. I feel that I will have more room to put stuff up high, and cleaner. I was originally thinking that I would try to hide the turbo behind the shroud, but am concearned with pulling heat off the turbo into the shroud to cool the cylinders and heads. Since the T-3 pulls fresh from the rear, there won't be an issue with a heat soaked turbo.

I am concerned with a little extra weight, and the extra length. How much more does a T-3 weigh, and how much longer?

We sure think alike ! I have a 71 type 3 engine saved back for a turbo set up and install in my Manx. I really like the look of the type 3 but the space left vacant where the type 1 fan shroud is the real reason for the swap. I think I can do the turbo without cutting the body, which is completely out of the question.

I dont think the type 3 is any heavier, maybe 10-15 pounds at most, and is about 6 inches longer. Mines apart or I'd measure it for you. I also beleave a good exhaust system can be "extended" to clear the fan shroud.

Oh yea another con or pro if it's a type 3 fuel inj. engine no provision for manual fuel pump in the case
I just had to replace my elec. pump on the road for the second time this
year !!! :x

Turbos require an electric fuel pump anyway, so its cool.

If you wait awhile, someone will post a message saying that T3 setups will suck sand & trash into the cooling passages... it never fails...

... wait for it.... waaaait for it.... anytime now...

Type 3 setups will suck sand and trash into the cooling passages

Really though, I've seen a couple buggies with type 3 cooling that look pretty good, especially with nice big webers and a fat turbo perched right in the middle of everything and a fat 3" exhaust off of the turbo shootin flames straight back. I've been looking for the picture but can't find it to save my self.

ya know t3 engines will suck up sand and trash....lol...j/k. really though, i was thinking about using a 67 t3 engine i pulled from a squareback in my manx clone. now i know it will work. thanks for the info. btw...mines a 1500 dp dual carb, im thinking about using some 87 mm pistons i have on the shelf in it.

dang....HeidelbergJohn4.0 beat me to it...lol

superman73 Fri Jun 27, 2008 10:49 am

i have this style exhaust for my buggy, do yall think it will clear and work on the t3 engine?

HeidelbergJohn4.0 Fri Jun 27, 2008 11:09 am

If I remember correctly those may hit the ends of the cooling housing. Many of them also have interference problems with dual carbs as well.

superman73 Fri Jun 27, 2008 11:56 am

the ones i have are not exactly the same, but close. they look as though they have glasspacks in the tubes. and they are black.

CBDZ_CBDZ Fri Jun 27, 2008 3:11 pm

OK...looking at the pictures, thank you by-the-way, it looks like the aluminum shroud hangs down pretty low. Is it lower than the main engine block?

Has anybody even cut off the snouts for the forced heater air? Those look kinda funky...not as clean as I remember.

Is this the look your after?

superman73 Fri Jun 27, 2008 6:29 pm

so, you wouldnt need a rear hanger of some sort? the squareback i pulled my engine from had a hanger at the rear top of the engine.
