Is there a way to find out what the original paint color was by vin? My vin is 2657086. Its a 1960 sedan. I dont know how to do this. I would like to know everything I could about this car. Origin, production date, etc. Any info would be appreciated. I just bought this car today. Got a killer deal, well at least I think so. No rust found yet. Drives great. What's the usual approx value on a 1960 in this shape? This is the first NICE bug ive owned.

This bug was in one family since 1960. They say they have replaced all the windows and seals and it was repainted 2 years ago. Has one small ding on right front fender from a kid dropping a bike on it. They have almost all receits and original papers but not the owners manual. They even have a large original 3 ring binder service manual specific to the year, said it came with the car. I have never seen one of these. According to the seller it was used on a vw magazine cover within the past 5 years but not sure which one. They say its all original but im trying to find out. I think the price I paid for this car is almost a steal. Only problems are it needs a new master cylinder and a new right front brake line. Everything else in the brakes was redone in the past 2 months.

Congrats, that is a VERY nice car and looks quite original to me. Too bad they painted it . As far as original color, destination, production date, etc., there is no way to determine that information with certainty from the chassis #. My best guess as to the build date would be Oct 14 1959, certainly within a few days of this at least.

I'm not sure if you know about "birth certificates" or not, but for about $50, you can write to the VW Museum with your name and VIN and they will send you back a nice certificate with all of the information you're looking for. They no longer provide original engine numbers but will confirm yours if you provide it. Some people have had some problems, and the wait tends to be long, but it is the only way to get the information you're after. Lots more info here:

In what seems to be a fairly "unmolested" car I would think you might find a paint code somewhere...look up the code for the color it should be so you'll know what you're looking for, then look in the trunk area for a tag or stencil with that number...you might luck up and find it...

It looks very nice....Fair warning though - You can't say how good of a deal you got again without saying how much you paid... just kidding...sorta...

Oh - I'd have an ocd kinda day if i didnt ask what was under the car cover... :D

jmsmilin Tue Jun 24, 2008 3:07 pm

sweet accessory fuel gauge, how is it hooked up to the fuel tank?

nm767 Tue Jun 24, 2008 6:41 pm

OK I payed 3k. As far as the mirror extension and fuel gauge, its just what was on the car. I drove it home a few hours ago and ended up taking it to the shop for a check up and new brakes. I love the horn. When I get the car (which we named HENRY), back i'll take more photos of it. Didn't know the fuel gauge wasn't original/ This is the first bug ive owned where the doors actually lock with the key. :D

Nice find! :D
Speaking of fuel gage, I also notice that there is no gas reserve handle.
On the floor to the right of the gas pedal or is the floor mat covering it?

nm767 Wed Jun 25, 2008 7:57 am

This is my third bug and I dont even know what the reserve handle is. Could you enlighten me a little more please.

gwol Wed Jun 25, 2008 8:15 am

This is the handle that you turn to active the reserve gas.

really good deal! No need for fuel tap since you have the gauge.. unless you just want to be original or have the backup system.
