DANGER! Do not deal with this person!
I "traded" a nice set of heads (which he is now selling without trading in good faith):
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=617158
for what he claimed were also a nice "set" of heads:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=609085
The heads he sent me were neither a "set", nor "nice". In fact, one is not even salvagleable. Total crap. He as of yet has not come through on his end of the deal, and has stopped emailing me.
His phone number in his profile is bogus: 775-241-0122.
I consider my heads as stolen property - do not purchase these:

What we know about him - I sent my heads to:

Hi Everett -
It is the address I sent my heads to.
It looked like a business on Google, but Google pointed me to his neighbor to the west. I spoke to his USPS and they verified the address was a residence.

Hi Everett -
I spoke with Jeff today. I called the number he left on another ad he has placed:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=620925
It doesn't seem to me that he is prepared to send me a set of stock-bore heads that are in anywhere near the condition of the heads I sent (90.5s), even though I asked him multiple times.
He doesn't want to undo the trade, even when I offered to pay for his shipping costs.
Even though he acknowledged the one-sidedness of the trade, he said that the heads are his "because they are in his possession", Even though he hasn't paid his equitable price (trade) for them. Then he said the heads aren't selling. Then he said he has a buyer.
He said "he would think about it" - either getting me a nice set of stock-bore heads, or sending mine back, but he wasn't very convincing.
I'll call him tomorrow. How far shall I go with these negotiations?

Can you get his original ad back (so that he can't edit it, if he didn't already do so before he deleted it):

I'll be happy to include a copy of the many pmails we exchanged. I would need a place to put them, for everyone to determine if he was being forthright, or being deceptive and withholding the fact that heads he sent me were basically unusable.

I sure hope you don't need to get involved in a lot of these. Quite frankly, I can't believe I had to get to this point. Thanks for all you do.
OK, so let's keep that ad in mind:
A pair.
Slightly used.
Less than 1000 miles.
No cacks (sic).
Single Hi-Rev springs.
I want to make clear that I took his heads to TC's Old V-Dub Home in Tujunga, CA to inspect. He's been a VW mechanic since the turn of the '70, that I know of, and probably before that. I have relayed to Jeff what TC told me about the heads. If we need to get him involved any further in this, he's at 818-353-0011.
I'll need a place to post pictures, both of the heads I send him, the heads he sent me, and our pmail.

Hi All -
Here's the email trail. Everett, I've double checked to make sure there isn't anything in the email that shouldn't be there (addresses, etc..), but you might want to check for that before getting into the meat of the thing.
I removed the pictures for now, since I don't want to waste bandwidth if I don't have to.
I will respond to Jeff's specific issues in my next post - after everyone has had a chance to read this:

Greetings Jeff -
I see you live in Nevada. I'm in the Los Angeles area, and will be going to The Classic. If you're going, we could meet there. If not, the USPS might make some money off of us.
Here are a few pictures of two different sets of heads I have. I haven't cleaned them up, other than a wiping, but will do so. The one I was referring to is on the right side of these photos (the VW casting) and the one on the left came off my son's 1776 Turbo, after about 3000 miles on the motor (the G01).
Both sets are in great shape - no cracks, welds, broken fins, stripped studs. Here are the specifics of each:
VW 040 casting:
040 101 375 (.13 - B?)
Bored for 90.5
Single springs. I believe these are stock springs.
Standard keepers/retainers.
VW G01 castings:
040 101 375 (B)
Bored for 90.5
Dual Hi-Rev springs.
CroMoly retainers.
AJ Sims made these heads for the Turbo, so I assume the keepers are CroMoly as well.
The #4 rod broke, and there are five bits of head that got touched. See the close-up on the top of the left head. Four dots and a scab. All that is needed is a little Dremel work to smooth it out. The pits are so small, there isn't anywhere near a cc of volume that would need to be smoothed. If you would like, I can take my Dremel to it. The reason I'm telling you about the G01s are because I'm done using dual springs on my street cars, so you can have your choice of heads.
You can also see on the last two pics that the G01 head has mildly tapered/beveled intake ports. I don't know if this is standard for the G01s, but it looks nice.
The crap on the retainers/rocker studs is dirt from snapping the first pictures...
Here are the pics.

(AT THIS POINT I NEEDED TO WAIT UNTIL SATURDAY TO HAVE MY MECHANIC
INSPECT THE HEADS. I DIDN'T LIKE THE DIFFERENT CASTING NUMBERS, AND
WANTED THEM INSPECTED TO MAKE SURE THEY WERE GOOD)
==============================================================================
From: Mike Visket
Date: 6/21/2008 8:55:45 AM
Hi Jeff -
I took the heads to my mechanic to inspect and sand blast. Oh boy... here's his story:
1) The heads don't match. One was made to make .5 more compression ratio than the other. See the ridge on the one vs. the other. This will take machining to correct.
2) One is a one-year only - the one with the pin on the intake port. The intake manifold that was attached to this head didn't have the matching hole for the pin, so the pin got pressed through the casting into the rocker channel. This will take welding to correct for the probable vacuum leak. He said quite often, pressing that pin causes cracks down the interior of the port. So this head is unusable as is, and at best questionable even after welding.
3) On the one-year only head, the mating surface of the head and cylinder has a ditch in it. This caused a leak, and the head would need to be machined to make that surface flat.
He was also going to pull the valves, but decided it wasn't worth it. There is already more labor costs making the heads usable than the heads are worth. One is salvageable, the other might not be.
I don't know what we can do. Any ideas?
Mike

Hi Jeff -
I can send these back to you. Not a problem. They will be on their way next week.
At this point, I am leaning toward you just returning my heads. I made sure they were ready to buff-and-go, as I described them. I was willing to take a loss just to get a proper set of stock heads I was looking for.
IF you have a set of matching heads, verified by a VW mechanic to be good, without requiring any labor or machining, let me know. Otherwise, let's just undo our transaction, and eat the shipping.

Greetings all -
I will now address Jeff's issues in detail:
<Jeff> once again you must not have read my add too closely it says a pair of heads not a matched pair like you are proclaiming </Jeff>
Here's the meat of the ad:
A pair.
Slightly used.
Less than 1000 miles.
No cacks (sic).
Single Hi-Rev springs.
Any reasonable (define reasonable? ya, ya, ya) person would read that and think they were a matched set. After all, how could you claim that they both had 1000 miles on them if they came from different decades?
<Jeff> you said your heads were done by AJ SIMMS where is the proof of that</Jeff>
You never asked for any of that before, but the proof is in my filing cabinet under "Turbo Bug". I bought the heads 90.5 from CB, and had AJ put all of the turbo goodies on there. I have the paperwork. Trust me.
Funny that you never asked to see the proof when you re-listed the heads both on he Samba or Craigslist. Less funny, is that the heads went from 3000 miles when I sent them to you to "less than 1500" miles when you re-listed them.
<Jeff> .you said you were building a stock motor now you are changing your mind(AGAIN)and want to build a big motor for your dub.make up your mind.</Jeff>
I don't see what on earth that has to do with the trade, but I specified 82*85.5 in my very first email to you.
<Jeff>you want the heads back so you can trade to somebody else basically renigging on our deal.</Jeff>
I don't think that's how it goes. The heads you sent me in trade are worthless - cost more in labor than they are worth, according to my 40-year VW mechanic. One of them is *probably* not even salvageable. That is the sole reason for my wanting my heads back. You couldn't offer an equitable trade. I think the word that escapes you is *equitable*.
I mentioned another trade because I fully expected my 90.5 to be shipped back, and someone else had a nice, verified set of stock heads she was going to sell, but would rather have traded me.
<Jeff>i told you if there were not happy with the heads i would send you another pair,no problem</Jeff>
And I asked you to make sure they were mechanic certified in good working order. I gave you multiple chances to respond. You didn't.
<Jeff>now you are copping an attitude with with me and telling people not to deal with me</Jeff>
I haven't copped an attitude yet. Believe me. I was true to my word through the entire transaction. See the emails starting June 23, 2008 9:43:05 PM PDT. Again, you didn't respond, and, true to my word, this.
<Jeff>WHO wouldnt trade a pair of stock dual port heads for a pair of so-called AJ SIMMS HEADS.you would be stuppid not too.</Jeff>
And you didn't have an equitable set of heads to trade, so why did you keep going? When you saw the heads I sent you, you SHOULD have let me know right away that they were way out of the league of the heads you had to trade.
<Jeff>at this point i dont even care .if you want you heads back you need to send me my heads back and you pay for shipping both ways.let me know <?Jeff>
The offer for me to pay your shipping isn't on the table anymore. I will keep the heads you sent me as evidence should this go forward to the USPS for interstate fraud. It looks like you'll have to *trust me* to send your heads back to you once I receive mine (remember? exactly the opposite of how it went down last time). Please have a shipping confirmation number to me by this weekend.
And that is my answer to Jeff's first post.

Hi All -
And now for a reply to his second post.
<Jeff>you are saying a (set) of heads .i said a pair of heads with less than 1000 miles on them so of course they are not going to be as nice as the ones you sent me</Jeff>
You didn't say: "Two unmatched heads of different compression ratios, requiring extensive machining and welding, and still, one head is probably not salvageable no matter how much money you throw at it for labor"
You claimed less than 1000, I specified 3000 miles. Explain that to me again?
<Jeff>get your facts straight and tell the people that come to the SAMBA to buy vw parts the whole story and not make it look one sided</Jeff>
My facts are out on the table (see all of the text above). Let's see - I send you the heads that, in your descriptions on The Samba and Craigslist. are "really nice". You send me scrap metal. That IS pretty much the whole story.
<Jeff>im sorry you werent happy with the (PAIR) heads i sent you .send me mine and pay for the shipping both ways and we call the deal closed</Jeff>
Jeff - it's time for you to step up and take some responsibility. You will pay for your shipping. Once I get my heads back in good condition, I will ship yours back to you. I thought this is what we were going to do a long time ago. Please get them in the mail and give me a confirmation number.
I want to reiterate this: I am keeping your heads as evidence of interstate fraud. I have already contacted the USPS, Craigslist, and Charter Communications. They have the URL to this thread. I am holding off going forward in hopes that you do the right thing.
<Jeff>i hope you dont do this to all the people you trade with.</Jeff>
Nope. Haven't had to. |

Hi Everett -
I have given Jeff enough time tonight to respond. When I spoke with him a few days ago, he said he gets home at 15:30, which means he must work an early shift, so I'll wait patiently for a response from him until tomorrow.
I wonder if you can make this thread a "write-only" thread, even by the author. I have gone back to correct a couple of spelling errors (not content), which says to me that any contributors to this thread could possibly delete text which they have already committed to.
If you have an audit of changes made to the text in this thread, then this request is moot.
