View original topic: Correct radio for a 52'

Would the correct radio for a 52' split window of been the IA52? From what I understand the IA52 was more for the preA market, is this true. Also I have seen several late model 51's with a IA50, which would lead me to believe an IA50 in a 52 split would be correct. Any help would be appreciated. Starting to look for radios and dont want to have something in there that is not correct.
Thanks

I wouldn't get too hung up here unless the rest of your car is going for the 100 point 100% original/authentic concours level goal line. The Porsche folks usually only want an IA52 in a Pre-A car, as its technically the correct year radio for that vehicle model, plus somewhere I'm sure there is a good amount of advertising and catalogs picturing these cars with that model radio. The idea being when you ordered or bought a car this was the current radio model available at the time, probably on display at the dealers also, so the mindset being you bought the latest and greatest, same as it is for the most part today.

I'm sure there were plenty of "last year's model" IA50 radios around at the time, so I'm sure IA50 radios found themselves into the dashes of the last year split beetles one way or the other. One thing to also consider is that the IA50 model is much more sought after than the IA52 mainly for its design, it just flatters the car's dash alot more with its more vintage art deco style design/features.

The www.gutefahrt.com website also has some good info on early radios, worth the read. Alot of what you might eventually go for also depends on your timeframe, when you need a radio, or want it, balanced against what might be available, seldom do all these factors meet at the same time. Good luck.

I agree with Gary. He's 100% right on. Its all a matter of personal taste too. I actually prefer the Lorenz over the Telefunken's. First off, they are more rare, you hardly ever see a Lorenz mounted, and Telefunken's are more common.

Shameless plug - I might sell my Lorenz (working condition and restored) if you are interested. PM me.
