wait, from 40mph, you werent able to stop? that sucks

it doesn't look too bad, if it were me, I would weld some tabs to the body lines, and pull the big stuff out, then use a hammer and dolly to get it straight

flybayb Wed Jun 25, 2008 1:54 pm

bummer -

here's the good news: It's just tin and you are ok
and here's the bad news: it's YOUR tin :(

you did the right thing (and took the right direction) - you could've hit your front man: your car totaled, your insurance goes up, evently you (or the other driver) get hurt - soooo

it doesn't look to bad - I am sure a good body shop can deal with it (if you would live closer to the border I could give you plenty of pointers  ) but hey - DC should have some good body workers

so - heads up - it's gonna be alright

Hmmm that sucks...but how is it "their" fault?

notchback Wed Jun 25, 2008 1:58 pm

You shouldn't have been following so close.

ditto -- and I repeat the question: how is this anyone's fault but your own?

RafCarre12 Wed Jun 25, 2008 2:38 pm

Overall... yes, it sucks ass but (and this is comping from someone that hasn't driven a type3 for very long) compared to newer cars, even if you have disk brakes in front... don't stop as well as more modern cars. With you being a more experienced driver, shouldn't you drive accordingly?

Again, it sucks... alot but take some accountability.

KTPhil Wed Jun 25, 2008 2:46 pm

Sure, it's his fault legally, and of course he is in control of the following distance. But I sympathize because in most driving situations, you can't leave the "three second rule" distance because someone will simply cut in and take it up. So it's a balancing game--not too far, not too close. And when you get complacent by driving the same route every day, you tend to take more risks without realizing it.

So wag your fingers all you want, but let he who is without sin cast the first stone. The rest of have just been lucky... so far. Tomorrow might be your day.

double ditto, and a threepeat on the question.

How much are they charging you to repair the fence?

bullshit -- as a driver, I have to be responsible for my actions 100% of the time... period...

I have three vehicles that I drive on a daily basis and each one requires a distinct driving behavior....

I haven't had an accident in over ten years ( and if you think I just jinxed myself, I'll sell you a magic 8 ball for the rest of your life's decisions) and it is because I drive both defensively and proactively...

wolfman's brother Wed Jun 25, 2008 2:58 pm

were there signs set out letting you know there was construction ahead?if not then those state workers could be at fault for not having a proper work zone set up

buuuut by the looks of that skidmark I'd be willing to bet you were driving faster than 40mph huh? northern va sucks when it comes to drivers, glad I don't have any business up there anymore.it takes a pretty good set of cajones to drive an acvw on a daily basis these days,I don't see how most of you do it.

example:if it had been my car and not dave's car that got plowed like it did by another driver I'd be in jail for assault right now  (not really but you get my drift)

I'd say chalk it up to "lesson learned" and slow it down a bit and be glad you or nobody else was seriously injured

but it does suck any way you slice it

KTPhil Wed Jun 25, 2008 2:59 pm

You don't drive in L.A. much, do you?

Three seconds is simply not an option. Period. Here you cope and negotiate and play the follow game to preserve what you can, but anything more than about five car lengths at freeway speed gets taken up whether you like it or not.

see I call bullshit on that, there's no need to drive the freeways like you're dale jr.sure lots of peole do it but does that give you just cause to do it too?

leave out for work or where ever you're going a few minutes earlier, take your time and enjoy the ride and let the other idiots blaze by and cause the wreck or get the ticket.that's just my 2 cents.

I learned to drive in LA growing up,never had a problem.

Agreed.

I have driven nearly a million accident free miles for one company alone in SoCal.

Always finished all my work and came home in one piece. Alot of it was luck, but mostly I watched where I was going.

KTPhil Wed Jun 25, 2008 3:22 pm

Come drive LA today, and you'll get an education. I've driven here for 35 years and "it ain't like it use'ta be." Courtesy has gone, cell phones and texting mean NObody is paying attention, so you REALLY have to drive defensively. How many PDAs were in the hands of drivers 10 years ago?

This was driven home (no pun) to me this year when I started to drive my old T3 to work occasionally. Without the power and brakes of my Prius, I had to anticipate and compensate for other drivers to a great degree. It took a LOT more attention on my part. So I thought about why, and it became clear that the better power, brakes, handling and comfort of the newer cars means you are in fact taking MORE chances than before, and the choice isn't all yours.

I used to drive my Bug (and this fastback) every day 70 miles round trip, and traffic was NEVER this rough on a slow stick-shift equipped car. I posted on the T3 forum a few months back on how traffic has changed since the demise of the ACVW. It's tighter, faster, more tense, and a LOT more dangerous.

So your driving style must change, and mine has. Driving LA means more work and more risk, which cannot be completely mitigated by "leaving early and leaving more gap." It's simply not an option due to the actions of other harried and hurried drivers.

The simple fact is that following distance is set not just by you, but by those in adjacent lanes who might NOT have taken your advice and left early. Unless your Deflector Shields Are Set To Maximum, Sulu, you can't stop a car from cutting in on you. Driving slower only encourages this MORE.

Like I said, it's a trade-off, and there is no longer the optino of just slowing down and leaving more distance. You have to pay attention, be ready to divert to another lane (tough for the original poster, but he was not on the freeway we are talking about), and keep your escape options open.

.

It's been this way for many years, nothing new.

KTPhil Wed Jun 25, 2008 3:28 pm

Sorry, not so. Traffic has dramatically changed in the last five years or so. Both on my daily route (essentially the same for 20 years now) and downtown at rush hour, it's nothing like it used to be. We have about 10% more lanes and about 25% more drivers. Do the math.

I have only been out of SoCal two years. You do the math.

KTPhil Wed Jun 25, 2008 3:33 pm

C'mon back. You'll see.

With $5 gas and a real estate bust, it's temporarily getting better. I also have the advantage of a carpool lane with my hybrid for some of my commute.

But talk to anyone here now and they will agree with me that between the latte, cell phone, pda, nav system, and iPod, drivers are not driving attentively and therefore WE must do their thinking for them.
